If the flights are not on the same ticket you're not protected. As the airlines are part of the same alliance they may accommodate you, but they don't have to. I've recently seen a colleague stuck in the US as their internal AA flight was delayed - BA were not interested in helping.
Which is why I specifically said AA - an airline which does protect connections on separate tickets on other Oneworld carriers.
It actually seems to be a Oneworld policy, but AA is the only airline that publicly acknowledges it.0
