sky's screwing me-help please

Options
Hi this is the situation as it stands, spoke to sky to cancel due to £2 hike on top of the £24.75 I pay for using a sky+box courtesy of brother as mine will not operate my new Seiki TV due to the need for HD connection. My Sony DVD recorder and TV have remained inoperable since December using their Sky controls which since informed is not their problem.Anyway I digress from my problem which is that I agreed to continue with sky after been offered a new box and hand set, family package upgrade with Sky catch up for £20.25 a month not having to pay anything extra again. Reasons for cancelling were limited funds, tiered of the remote not working, threat of loosing my discretional housing help as Sky was an unjustifiable expense. The £20.25 offer with the TV operating with no more to pay was OK and if the TV didn't work the deal was off. Three letters on I'm on Family, 9 months and 28 days viewing discounted, £29.75 -£12.50 for £17.25 a month effective immediately unless agreed. Not as I thought on the 08/05/15 between 8am and 1pm the date Sky TV will be set up as I found out after a 54 minute call to cancel only to find that the change was automatic even though installation was on the above date. Existing customers are not given a cooling off period apparently but their first letter received explains I have the right to a cooling off period and seeing how this is a new order with a 12 month contact surely this is a new and separate contract which voids any other contract and seeing how I was contracted out to an old box not a sky+HD box which was provided by my brother not SKY and due to the length of time I was with SKY I was not in any ongoing contract with them at the time of the initial conversation/new contract. No verbal representation was made to me that I was in a new contract from the date of the call or that I was unable to cancel if my remote failed to work bearing in mind that I stipulated that if the remote failed to work I was not going to go ahead. The conversation today clearly states that if the remote works its a bonus really not Sky's problem more the TV's manufacture. As I see it I placed an order for a Sky +HD box with the frills at a price that does not match up with the conversation I originally had and to top it all my contract with sky was for the old box not the Sky+HD box, got the bu**ers, what do you think?
Me I've no real assets, on benefit due to disability so I've told him take me to court if you can't resolve it, the publicity will really help and the mention of MSE did not go down very well, not that I think they will care. Advice as how to sort this please.

The remote does not work yet as you need to code it to your TV.

It does not know what equipment you have, you need to tell it.

There is no cooling-off period on an upgrade or contract extension. You were already in a minimum term contract at the time, albeit one requiring 30 days notice.
The remote issue is a complete red herring and would not allow you to cancel without paying an ETC.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I sympathise with you and for years we paid out to Sky. After a bit of research we found an answer to the problem. We dumped Sky, bought a freesat box with record and catchup, then when Amazon brought out the Fire TV box we added this giving endless hours of entertainment, much of it totally free. Didn't even need a new sat dish so set up was a doddle. And yes, we don't get blockbuster movies on release , but on a yearly basis , we have saved a significant sum of cash. Hope this helps.

They cancel . Few get decent offers without doing this.

CANCEL -live without Sky for a few days/weeks if necessary -the forums are still full of people who carry thru' with cancellation and end up saving £100s per year when Sky finally make an acceptable offer:):)
AND don't forget you can still use your Skybox to watch Freesat from Sky progs. albeit without the recording functions.
