Well its a strange thing to buy if not for an investment. It's expensive and a target for theft and not much to look at. I could think of better things to do with the money.

    The OP
    a) Doesn't seem to care
    b) Didn't really ask for opinions

They're buying gold and asking what the options are. Let them spend their money on what they want

I suppose that the same could be said for the new Apple watch but people are falling over themselves to get hold of one.

Each to their own I say.

Evening team. Thanks for everyone's input..

To clarify... Spent my entire life in debt, but have worked my butt off to turn that around. These days, my monthly bills have been screwed down as low as possible and am putting what money I can away for my future (retirement fund if you will)
I put money into a fidelity thingy, a vls 80 thingy, got a few quid in funding circle, a few shares, but I really want to own some gold. My thoughts are that if I can buy an ounce every birthday between now and 60 I will have something lovely to look at rather than figures on an app on my phone.
Have decided that I will buy an Austrian philharmonic coin tomorrow night.
Thank you, team. So glad I didn't get lots of replies calling me stupid.

Rather excited! Been planning this for years!

Good choice, a great looking coin.

Dont forget to either leave it in the protective capsule or if it doesnt come with one then get one.

999 gold is very soft and scratches and dings easily and you dont want to ruin your new precious :)

Great looking coin, it's thinner than most which makes it wider and even more impressive

However allow me to pose a thought. If you are going to be buying one every birthday you might want to reconsider the Australian Lunar series. A different reverse frosted 9999 coin every year for 12 years representing each animal in the Chinese lunar calendar. You could go for the set. If you are 40 this year I am guessing you are the year of the Ox, available in 2021 :)

Or the UK lunar series, only 2 released so far so easier to catch up with the set. CGT free too.

Cheapest place here I believe -

Have just ordered my Austrian philharmonic! Am stupidly excited! I'm not sure why, but years ago I think I saw on the wall in a Chinese takeaway that I was the year of the rabbit.... I will look into this set, and others, and build up a collection. I think I may become addicted to buying gold coins (Jim lad!)
