Same happened to us when looking to buy our last house. Had an offer accepted on a lovely (although in need of major work) grade 2 house, then a bit of digging online brought up plans for a new development in the fields behind. Indeed work on the foundations had begun when we went for our next viewing to measure up.
Initially when questioned about this both vendor and their EA denied all knowledge, then - when confronted with evidence - they played it down saying the houses to be built were actually low- level bungalows.
At this outright lie we walked away.Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

Quite probably a family home for a large family. Possibly various grandparents and inlaws are going move in with the existing family. Or they're planning on having more children, and/or want an au pair. Or are going to work from home and want home office(s).A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
