Our system is quite old, we have thermostatic valves and a fully programmable timer.

Our system is old too and we have valve thermostats so I'm deciding between easy to use timer switch or thermostat

    I decided on new timer

I've recently moved house, and have inherited a programmer like the one in your OP. There is also what I thought was a kitchen timer, but it turns out it's the thermostat!

I've had a quick look online to find out how to use it, but whatever I do the thermostat keeps setting itself back to 17 degrees, and the heating keeps turning itself on.

    Hive in our house.

It's improved loads in the last few months resulting in zero communication errors now.

Dead easy to operate and set up with multiple on offs and temp settings.

We have a Tado location aware thermostat and hot water control system. Means we control everything from our phone, or a wireless smart thermostat

Do you control your central heating by thermostat

    Or by timer

Both. Wireless thermostat in the hallway, and a timer next to the boiler to determine when the heating and hot water comes on.

The combination of the two works fine for me, and I rarely feel the need to fiddle with any of the controls.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I use exactly that timer, and the individual radiators have tvrs. I've had the old type thermostat before and it was always in the wrong place so the heating wasn't on/off as required
