Dog wee smell on concrete

My dog uses our yard as a toilet. I regularly hose it down & scrub the area with a hard brush but it is starting to smell, especially when it rains.

Any advice on products to clean away the smell? It gets worse when it's wet.

Thanks!

Bio washing powder or white vinegar are good, non-toxic products to use around dogs. I'd still give it a rinse, but better than some household cleaners which contain toxic phenols.

Alternatively, look up kennel cleaners - Mistral is meant to be a good one, and comes in loads of different scents

You need an odour remover- Mistral works well.

The urine will have been absorbed into the ground in between slabs etc so you need to let anything you use soak in there as well.

Thanks, I'll look out for Mistral. I've tried bicarb and white vinegar but it didn't do much. Would it be worth getting a pressure washer on it? There's no gaps between slabs as it is a concrete pad. It's not sealed so I think the urine has seeped into it.

  • The wee has to go somewhere - when you hose it down where does it go?

is there a drain or does it just go into the ground somewhere

I've found Maisie pees on the same bit of the garden and it can get quite pongy - I do rinse but really I'm just diluting it more so def a good cleaner as others have mentioned

There's a drain not too far away so it all goes into there. I'm going to try the bio washing powder next.

Then leave any cleaning solution on for a while to let it also seep in.
  • I recall my parents having a couple of dogs whilst I grew up (and subsequently) but they were never allowed to pee in the garden. As I recall, they must have been taken out for walks and that's when they got a bit of "relief".

Is it too late to re-train the dog that walks are when they go to the loo and not in the garden?

My dog will go for hours when we are out and not go but goes as soon as we get back to the garden, i would love to be able to train her to go when we are out, any ideas. the trainer said treat her when she goes when we are out, but she doesn't go to be able to treat her, so that is no good. Also she wont go to the loo whilst on the lead. My yard is beginning to smell toand it is washed down twice a day

Try a product called glimmermanns, it comes in different scents, I use the bubblegum one it smells lovely and really does remove the urine smell, I had same problem but this stuff really works its a disinfectant and deoderiser, I just dilute it with hot water and rinse down my patio once a day and then rinse again with clean hot water

Sadly it's too late for the dog to be retrained. She's 15 years old with arthritis in her legs so cannot be taken for walks any longer. We do have a garden which she goes on but the yard is nearer for her. (Garden is up at first floor level and she has to be carried up there)
