Who supplied my electricity in the past?

Hi there,

Is it possible to check who supplied my electricity in the past. We are a domestic flat but for some reason are being supplied by a business supplier (Haven Power).

The flat has always been a domestic flat so why have Haven taken over our supply? We, nor the previous tenant have ever been a business. Can we check when they took it over? And can we check who supplied us before Haven did?

Ask Haven to look for, they can check on ECOES which lists the supplier and dates going back years. Who used to supply doesn't impact you, switch to a domestic supplier but do it by phoning them as they will need to change your Profile Class to a domestic one if it currently set to a non domestic one. Again Haven should be able to advise you of your profile class and the date it became effective.

I'd get on with it ASAP, as you will be paying 20% VAT on it rather than 5%.

Thanks for this Spiro, is there any way we can check without Haven getting involved? We are in a dispute with them as they should never have taken over the supply in the first place.

You can look on the national grid website. That will show you the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for your area. If you then look up the contact details for your DNO they will be able to tell you who your previous suppliers were and the supply contract start and end dates. They will either need your full address & postcode or your full meter MPAN number which will be on any of your bills (the 13 digit number on the bottom row).

Quick Update:

I attempted to move to NPower but after hearing nothing from them for a week called them up only to be told that I can't move to them because i have a related meter and am currently on an Economy 10 tariff. They suggested speaking to Haven Power to get the meter changed to an economy 7 meter and then they can perhaps supply me. Is this correct?

I attempted to move to NPower but after hearing nothing from them for a week called them up only to be told that I can't move to them because i have a related meter and am currently on an Economy 10 tariff. Do you own the flat, or is it rented?

its a 50:50 owned flat between us and the housing association

Then I suggest you contact the HA first to ensure they would have no objections.

If they are ok with it, seek independent expert electrical advice as to the modifications you may require. Expect possible rewiring and/or new more suitable appliances to be required to suit whatever you want to change the electricity supply to.
