The 3A lead will be fine.
Sure? I've been told it will just blow?Miroslav, your pm message box is full.
Cleaned it out
Now, nowhere in my town sells these leads. Not gone to Maplin's or anything on the retail estate but will just go for the one in Nodding Donkey's link.0 -
just flicked on this topic , I thought that those leads were available in what was called "hot" and normal , the normal leads had a vertical earth pin , whilst the "hot" leads used on kettles had a earth pin that was horizontal.
OP , is the lead not the same as the mains lead on your computer or monitor ?

Ok, i've been a drongo - it's not a kettle lead, it's a figure of 8 lead - what a numpty! I did say I know nothing about electrics.
Anyway, that is what I need - I knew what I needed visually but I called it the wrong thing. Still, we had none in my town. I haven't checked a PC shop as they are all on the retail estate. I may walk up there on Bank Holiday Monday.
I have found one at home, but it is literally 0.5m in length- it is figure 8 and it says 5A/250v on the plug part of the lead just like the one lead I do have for the other DVD player but as I say, it is too short, it won't reach the plug for where I am situating it.
Looking on eBay, all the listings I have checked don't list any ampage at all.
Sorry folks for the mis information

Thank you.
Right...
I have found a figure of 8 cable. It had a 3amp fuse in it, it has been hooked out. I also searched the cupboards - I have a 5amp fuse. It is old though. Unsure if it has ever been used but certainly not for 10-15 years if it has been as it was in a box from the person I live with's father who is long gone. A Bussmann BS 1362.
So, I put this one in to replace the 3A and then I try it....what is the worst that can happen?
PS - the fuse is rattling inside - is this ok?0 -
rattling fuse is not good , you will be ok to use any small fuse , until you can collect a 3a one ,
"don't panic Mr Mainwaring"0 -

It's the casing on the fuse holder on the plug that holds the fuse that is rattling. Phew.
It's a 5a fuse I need as the DVD player is running off a 5a already (Just opened the working figure 8 plug up) so I now have a second 5a figure 8 lead made up. I've not been brave enough to try it yet though....0 -
Looking around it says always fit a new fuse with one that was the same as the old one.
I'm going from 3amp in this lead to 5amp - this is safe to do?
I'm nearly ready to make the step...0 -
the fuse has to be high enough to power the unit , and then blow if it takes excessive currant
dvd thing takes 1 amp to run , with a 3 amp fuse in it , if it goes bang inside the fuse will blow when it takes more than 3 amp , so reducing a fire risk
with a 13a in , it would blow at 13a , and the unit might be in flames as it melts
in your case 3 a or 5 a will not hurt it
" it says always fit a new fuse with one that was the same as the old one." , but what do you fit if its a new lead supplied without a fuse in it?0 -

Ok, a 5a is in it now as it's what I have been using,
You make a good point re: without a fuse in. 5a must be safe as it's what the other lead has and what the manual suggests.
Here goes...0
