Lost DVD Lead

This is going to sound dumb, so please forgive me.

I have two DVD Recorders - exactly the same. I used to have one in my living room and one downstairs. They are both now downstairs in different rooms. One has been barely used but when I do use it, I use the same power lead, so take it out of one and put it in another as somehow I moved the second one but didn't connect it straight away and i've mislaid the power lead :o

This is now becoming more annoying as we have started using the second one more but cannot use both of them at the same time.

So, we need a second power lead. It's your basic kettle type power lead and it is 5amps.

Is it safe to get another kettle lead from a shop which isn't from the same DVD Recorder as long as it is 5 amps fused? Or do I have to look at something else?

I have googled and i'm finding all this info on cable thickness and rating.

Thanks for any advice.

ETA -
A molded plug complying with
BS1363 is fitted to this equipment
for your safety and convenience.
Should the fuse in the plug
supplied need to be replaced, a 5
AMP fuse approved by ASTA or
BSI to BS1362, (i.e., marked with
or mark) must be used.
If the plug supplied with this
equipment has a detachable fuse
cover, be sure to attach the fuse
cover after you change the fuse.

kettle leads are interchangeable, assuming there is no transformer in the middle, the fuse warning is there to warn you not to use anything with a 13amp fuse in it, the dvd probably uses far less than 5amps, the fuse protects the lead from fire if the device malfunctions, the thing will work with a 13a fuse, but if you use one, you've just overriden the safety mechanism a properly rated fuse provides. Before moulded plugs came along, a lot of stuff had 13A fuses in unless the owner had the nouse to change them

If it's not in the dog, it must be somewhere nearby.

Thanks, I notice my kettle has a 13amp fuse, so won't go there...

It probably got packed away with the spring clean. I'll look again tomorrow but if it's safe just to buy another 5amp kettle lead with no chance of blowing the circuit, the DVD Recorder or myself, I may just do that if I can't find it.

You can use an actual kettle lead, you just need to change the fuse. You can usually buy a pack of mixed fuses in Poundshops.

May do that. Easier than finding the right lead.

The circuit or the dvd player will not blow because of the choice of kettle lead fuse, it's the other way around, the fuse protects the lead in an overload (fire) situation caused by a faulty player or lead

just use something with a 5a fuse in, or search the house, it's easier and cheaper.

I've looked and most of my appliances with same lead appear to be 13a or 3a - how annoying. Not to worry though it appears easier than I had thought as thought maybe i'd need to think of other things than ampage but it seems not.

Thanks for the link. If for any reason I cannot find one today, i'll go for that.

The 3A lead will be fine.

Partly correct - a fuse is also there to try and limit the amount of damage to the circuitry should something go wrong.
