upgrade to win 10 is going to be FOC from win 7 and win 8.x , for the first year , I did not spot vista ? have you got a link that says win 10 will be free to vista users?0
-
if you upgrade, after presumably jumping through a few frustrating microsoft hoops, you will most likely end up with a very cluttered and possibly messed up or not fully working machine, if you buy it pre-installed, you won't.
Prices tend to be competetive whatever, a w8.1 machine may be cheaper at the time 10 is released, there will be old stock to offload.
If you're only buying because vista won't shutdown and firefox is slow, backup your data to another disk and/or machine, and press F8, advanced, factory restore, problem solved, or reinstall firefox, antivirus etc0 -

I'm not aware that you can upgrade from vista to 10 or even 8/8.10 -
;68308871]I had considered that and wait until windows 10 is released. But then I was reading that I can upgrade to 10 without any additional cost and laptops might be more expensive byt the time windows 10 is in the shops
well in the statement above , you make it sound like you think you are going to get a free upgrade on YOUR laptop ,0 -
Sorry - I meant if I were to buy a new laptop with windows 8.1 - I would be able to upgrade to 10. I don't mean upgrading my old vista laptop. Sorry if I didn't make that clearenfield_freddy wrote: »well in the statement above , you make it sound like you think you are going to get a free upgrade on YOUR laptop ,0 -
ok , I apologize for jumping down on you , with the prices of laptops dropping , a laptop that cost £750 five yrs ago could easily be replaced by one costing in the low £200 now ,0

That's what I figured. My current laptop only cost me £345 and for around the same price, I could get one with an I5 processor with webcam/mic. My laptop doesn't even have that. I have to rely on my mobile to do skype video calls. ( I do know that I can get a separate webcam, but again, it's not cost effective if I need to buy a new laptop).enfield_freddy wrote: »ok , I apologize for jumping down on you , with the prices of laptops dropping , a laptop that cost £750 five yrs ago could easily be replaced by one costing in the low £200 now ,0 -

before looking for the magic "i5" machine , note that most modern laptops have very cut down (performance) CPU,s to help battery life , most of those have a letter after the CPU type , ie: i5 4130(T) (made up number) , those are very low powered ,
please refer to this list before spending any money
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
scroll down and look for your chosen CPU , and look at the figure next to it (cpu passmark)
a very basic (but usable) PC would have a figure of close or above 3000.0
