It's patchy - sometimes OK...sometimes very slow and locks up for a while, then "free's" itself IYSWIM? Seems MUCH worse if we are using MSOffice whilst online - which is a damned nuisance as this is often what the kids need to do when looking for stuff for homework.

I have to say that since I dumped Norton and installed AVG, ad-aware, spybot and Sunbelt Kerio, PLUS CCcleaner, both my laptops run as fast and smoothly as their RAM allows. Not a problem ever, no viruses, nothing. Just the odd tracking cookies now and then which are removed by ad-aware and spybot.

I run AVG once a week and spybot/adaware every 3 days, and ccleaner every night. Maybe OTT, but I ain't changing a habit that works. ;)

I agree with you Quasar- we had Norton for years and the computer crashed and would freeze randomly, now we have AVG, adaware & spybot and the computer runs smoothly.

Also the start up is MUCH quicker than with Norton (and best of all you don't have to pay for any of the software).

    Norton is NOTHING but trouble!!!

Yes the startup is very quick indeed. My current lappy (1GB ram) takes about 20 seconds to start up now, while the older one (516 ram) takes about 45 seconds now. Before it took much longer.

The good thing is that AVG, spybot and adaware can be updated even thought they are free. I think it's crazy to pay for security when you don't need to.

I have Ccleaner and Advanced Windowscare, I slightly prefer the second. Also for those who know a bit more Regseeker (XP though, don't use it on Vista!) is very thorough and better than the previous two but you do have to know what you are doing with it as it can find false positives (I.E delete important things) so I wouldn't recommend it to people who are not used to modifying the registry.

Another vote for GET RID OF NORTONS.

And use this too to really get the job done. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

The protection it affords can be bettered for free elsewhere and held me back for years. Presently using Sygate Firewall and Avast Anti Virus. Machine now runs as it should

I downloaded the Sunbelt Personal Firewall- seems to do the job for me :D

Even reinstalling a newer version of Norton when it went wrong was a pain.

Free software no pain to the computer or your wallet :P
