Should I share my energy switch cashback?
Comments
-
I recently moved into a flat with friends and have been put in charge of the energy bills. I decided to switch supplier since we were paying more than we needed to and as part of the switch I've received £30 cashback. We pay equally for the energy so I feel we should share all the benefits, but at the same time I put in the effort to find the best deal and make the switch happen. Also, the payments come from my account and I often end up having to chase them for their share each month so I feel a little entitled for the hassle. Should I share the cash or pocket it?

Spend it on the house or your housemates - have a big night in, or put it towards some drinks for your housemates on a night out.0

Keep it. Whoever is in charge of other things like your broadband are free to claim cashback themselves when setting that up. If everyone sorts out their own responsibilities then I don't see a problem.0

It's yours. Surely you picked the best deal for the house without taking the cashback into account, right? They're not paying for your cashback so it's fine. And they are rude and childish to not pay up on time which would not make anyone want to give them free money.0

I would tell them about the cashback and see what they say. Their response could go two ways: share the cashback because we all share the bills, or, nice one, you've got us a better deal so keep it.0

Surprised you needed to ask!
These are your friends!

Share it. Haven't we had this dilemma before? Only a tight-fisted person would keep it for themselves, and you wouldn't want your housemates to think you were that sort of person, would you?0

The very fact you are asking the question should tell you that you SHOULD. Whilst you say you put in the effort, having switched energy suppliers many times over the years, I know it's hardly hard work. Why don't you put the £30 cashback into the "pot" towards your next energy bill.0

When I shared a flat at uni, I split my £100 cashback from our internet bill with my flatmate. She was chuffed that I had split it with her, and I think it set us off on a good start as we shared for 2 years with no problems.
Treat people how you want to be treated. Depending how many you're sharing with, £30 split between you probably won't be much to shout about. If it were me, I wouldn't be bothered over a tenner but your flatmates might appreciate you at least offering to share it.0 -
No you have done all the hard work for the rest of the idle B****** so it's yours.0
