Term Time holiday fine.

So what part of going to/dealing with school in the UK is an "Overseas Holiday"?0 -
If they have a very good reason for not being able to return when they originally planned, they could ask the school to allow the absences. The Head can give permission if there are 'exceptional circumstances'.
You haven't said what the unforeseen circumstance was OP but if it was serious enough for the adults to stay off work then hopefully school will see it as exceptional too.
As it's now 2 or even three weeks since most schools returned from Easter holidays are you saying they're still abroad? Must be a serious problem. I hope someone has contacted the school to explain.0 -
razam, please check your friend has spoken to the school? Emailed, texted, phoned - just let them know.
Almost every fine can be scrapped for a good reason & several weeks worth of good reason? Even an unexpected marriage can be coped with but the fines slam down & mount up where there is ignorance & non-communication.0 -

Sorry for the lack of reply on my part.
It seems it may actually be £60 per day! when she got home she had a letter saying her fine was over £1k. Her daughter was out of school for just under 2 weeks. I'm not too sure if she was in contact with the school or not. I've also asked for a copy of the letter, to see if they provided a breakdown of the fine (per parent/per day etc.). I'll update once I know.
In regards to why I posted on this thread, well I couldn't see any thread which directly relates to school-term holiday fines, so this thread being "Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning" I felt was the next closest thing....as she had to plan (for a fine), whilst travelling on a overseas holiday! ;-)0 -

Presumably that's just a standard letter as the authorities are not aware of the facts?
It seems that the actual reason is somehow confidential, but if it was a genuine incident that prevented them from coming back, the fine should be overruled.0 -
Ye Gods, razam, that's a hideous amount of money - which does again raise the question has either parent been in touch with school yet? (Or does it take a 4 figure bill to get them to talk?!)
As that bit of paper could have been avoided with a single text in several cases, and will now take a hefty letter probably with copy evidence to sort.
All strength to you!0 -

My reckoning is £1200 (10 school days @ £60 for each parent) but what matters is the reason. If it's exceptional then the fine would be waived.
Don't worry about posting on here razam. It's only a pedant who would think it the wrong place. Most term time holiday threads seem to end up on money saving for families thread but that's because some parents start from the money and think of learning last. They generally end up as teacher bashing threads.
Only this weekend I read ridiculous (IMO) article in the paper

When you scroll down through the various holidays on offer, a journalist makes a case for how educational holidays can be. Yes, no problem with that. But do they close down antiquities during school holidays?????0 -

This sounds wrong.
Ring up your local authority and ask for the code of practice on school attendance and the issuing of fines.
You might even find it on google.0 -
Would be interesting to see if the travel insurance cover it. I assume they already have a claim in for their 'unforeseen circumstances'June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000
