I can't start a new thread or post

jsnrs
I cannot find the New Thread or New Post button on any forum except this one. I have wasted so much time looking at tutorials and videos but the button is not showing where you say it should be for me to make a new post. Very frustrated.

What board are you wanting to post on?

It's interesting that jsnrs was perfectly capable of posting a new thread here on this board, so there is nothing wrong with their understanding or competency in doing the task.
They say that they are unable to do the task on other boards because the facilities are not there for them to do so.
Whilst the 'new thread' button is clearly visible to fermi (and to myself) on other boards, we are both long-term members and regular posters - so we might not be in quite the same situation (as far as this site's software is concerned) as the OP.
I note that jsnrs is a very long-standing member (June 2008) but has never actually posted before doing so here and now.
Is this significant?
We already know that the forum handles new members differently from existing members in terms of the new 'Blue' (i.e. White) layout.
It seems possible that certain users might find other parts of the site different, depending on how a whole host of characteristics interact with the way the software has been 'patched together' in recent times.
There seems to me to be no reason to doubt that what jsnrs says they are seeing is what they are actually seeing.
Why would they bother to say otherwise?
But many who might be in a similar position wouldn't search all through the site looking for a board on which they could raise the matter. They would simply go away without asking their question.
Surely that ought to be a possible scenario that MSE Towers should investigate?0 -
In fact the OP isn't the first one facing this problem: Difficulty starting a new thread!0

In fact the OP isn't the first one facing this problem: Difficulty starting a new thread!
A long-term user who had previously started 4 normal threads about relevant stuff on relevant boards suddenly has to post on the Site Feedback board to say they no longer can do it.
They receive no obvious help on that board, yet a week later do manage to post a thread on one of the mainstream boards.
My guess (and that is all it can be) is that they contacted the Forum Team directly and someone manually reset some setting for them. (The timing gap seems about right.)
Curiouser and curiouser ... :think:0 -

Not always. A couple of exceptions or misunderstandings.
- They are not there on top level categories, which sometime mistakenly are assumed should have a new post button. They appear similar to a forum link after all. Same for category sub-boards where posting is only on further sub-boards from those.
- Could be looking at boards that are closed for posting for other reasons, so have no new thread button. CAB board for example.
The OP's question suggested they have looked wider than that, but would not be the first time I've people claim something is missing everywhere, when in fact they have only checked a limited subset. So have to check.
Hence why I asked at first where exactly they were trying to create a new thread, as if that happened to fall in the above cases after all, that is the simplest explanation and easiest to remedy.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Hi I have the same problem, I am unable to post a new thread but can you also direct me to where I can contact the forum team to try and rectify this?
Thanks1 -
This is the best place to contact the team, but they are busy with fixing the bugs in the new version of the forum that all new members are forced into.
On this board it's a "+ New Thread" button on the right site of the huge space-wasting banner at the top.
The same button can be found at the bottom of the board.
Alternatively you can use "Forum Tools" drop-down menu above the banner.0 -
1. Totally agree with fermi
2. We don't know how new forum treats new registered users. On some forums new users have to post in 1 only "category"/board (to cut the spambots off)
3. There is a link to manage the versions: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/profile.php?do=manageversion Pippajane1010, jsnrs, are you able to switch to the old version there and if your are does it help the problem?0 -
Testing with a new account I found I could post a new thread straight away if you look in the right place and obviously don't try it on category boards and other pages where the option simply won't be there.
