Better to go with a combination that is known good and working, than to spend a fortune on one that is not. If you run into a stupid incompatability that nobody else has experienced, your basically on your own.

    Bundle not usually cheapest.
The incompatablity usually with RAM. I suggest get the ram from amazon, which is easily return if there is issue.

Or check the list from motherboard manufacture before purchase.

BTW, I don't think it is necessary to spend £200 on motherboard. you could find something nice with mid-range £130 - 140.

And do you know intel new Broadwell cpu is going to release this quarter? And Skylake-S with LGA1151 & DDR4 RAM in Q3. I personally would hold fire at least until new broadwell release if I were you

Overclockers were doing a i7-4790K with an Asus Maximus VII Ranger motherboard combo. That works fine.

Downside is that it is only a £10ish saving over buying the two separately and the Ranger does have bells and whistles aimed primarily at gamers (as it is part of Asus's ROG lineup) so may not be worth the extra expense if you're not really interested or concerned about that stuff.

ETA: Doesn't include RAM but I think they may have other bundles that do.

Ok, so you've got a new system, it runs but hard crashes every 20mins or so, leaves no log files, ALL the components were bought individually, now it could be the RAM, it could be the CPU, it could be the GFX card, it could be the motherboard, it could be a dodgy HDD, it could be the PSU.

Same again, but this time you bought a bundle, so you know the Mobo/CPU/RAM have all been tested and definitely work as they should.
Your fault finding suddenly got a lot less expensive.

This was the situation I faced 6 months ago, with random hard crashing and no evidence of what could be causing it. The consensus online was faulty RAM or mobo, but knowing I had a working bundle I took a best guess and replaced the GFX card and the problem disappeared.

As for manufacturer compatibility lists, I had an Asus mobo on my first every home brew PC (in 1999), it ran fine, but after 3 years I wanted to upgrade to a faster CPU, I checked the manufacturers compatibility list and sure enough the 2Ghz CPU was listed as being compatible.
I fitted the CPU only to find that whilst it ran, the motherboard could not clock it to it's full speed without getting out a soldering iron and bodging the PCB.

A lesson well learned, never trust the manufacturers claims, never trust specifications, only trust experience.

This is a game changer. I made this exact same mistake with my current build of getting 1366 mobo build just as 1150 came out. I got burnt hard.
