Help with new computer build.

Options
Hello everyone,

I need to build a new computer but I need some advice on parts. The build will revolve around an i7 4790K chip but I cant decide on what motherboard and cooler to buy.

Obviously I need a 1150 socket supported mobo but other than that I have no idea what to look for in a good motherboard. With the cooler I was thinking about h100i because my ambient room temp is 35C and in summer can get astronomically high.

Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

h100i is a good bet for the cooler.

The motherboard makes a lot less difference than it used to, especially if you don't intend to overclock; so question 1: do you intend to overclock?

Question 2: do you have much need for huge amounts of expansion? Or will you just be adding a single graphics card and memory?

And question 3: Are you sure you actually want an i7 chip? Unless you do a lot of video editing, there's really not much advantage over the i5 series, especially if you stick with the Socket 1150 i7's

And finally Q4: what's your budget for the motherboard?

Hi audigex, thanks for the reply.

Not straight away...but I would like to have the option down the line.

SLI would be nice but from what i've heard, SLi can be more trouble than it is worth so I usually stick with 1 gpu. On a side note could I use two gpus not in sli. I currently have a 660ti and a 970. Is there any benefit to sticking both in one system? As for memory i'm going with 2x8 kingston hyper beast. Again I would like to have the option to expand for future-proofing purposes.

I do alot of video/photo editing and actually wanted to go 6 or 8 core but I cant afford it right now so I decided on i7 4970k

    £200 ish

check the chipset model h81 = 16g max

although "why" you would need more is a mystery?

For that sort of money you want to spend, have you consider i7-5820K with X99?

This depends what you do the computer. For graphics and gaming, having 2 gpus, not in SLI wont really help, as you will only make use of the card thats outputting to the display.
SLI isn't without its problems, but is sometimes the only way to get enough graphics power.
But unless you are running very high resolutions, a single card will be fine.

My 770 can handle 5760x1200 ok on older games, but i need to use SLI for newer ones

You can run PhysX on a secondary card to take off some of the load from the primary, but the benefit of this is debatable

Multiple gpus can be used for Cuda and DirectCompute, but its not something most people will find useful, and usually relies on custom software

It also used to have the benefit of being able to plug in more monitors, but modern cards can already do plenty now

I dont want to go 6/8 core until it becomes more of a standard.

I guess I'll stick with one gpu for now.

6/8 cores or more with dual cpus have been standard on high end workstations and severs for donkey's years, All the top benchmarks for games are on these CPUs. I'm not really sure what you're waiting for.

I'm a bit wary of the corsair hydro coolers, the original H100 I had to RMA 4 (either DOA or the pump was far too noisy) of them before I gave up and got and Noctua air cool and it wasn't all that much cooler either.
I'm the newer ones are better but for it wasn't worth the extra noise.

Motherboards, honestly I'd just buy the cheapest Z97 board which has all the bells and whistles you want on it and will fit into your case. The core chipset is provided by Intel anyway, so its really just the extra features they are stuffing on the board.
If you really don't care about overclocking or multi-gpus save some money and get a H97 board.

I've got a H100i on a 4790k and the pump makes very little noise. Because I'm not currently overclocking, I also installed the Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition fans and the whole system is very quiet. In a room with a TV on a moderate level, you can't hear the system at all and in an otherwise silent room it makes much less noise than a desk fan.

I've heard a lot of bad things about the H100 but the H100i seems to be a huge improvement. Because of my setup, you don't see a lot of improvement on idle (28-32 degrees) but on load during gaming and some video rendering it doesn't go past 55 degrees and during a stress test it didn't get much past 65.

I wouldn't install Quiet Edition fans if overclocking though as they can't crank out the cooling needed but the extra noise would be from the more powerful fans rather than the pump.

The base clocks are low and for programs that dont use more than 4 cores will be slower than 4970k unless I overclock from the get go in which case then the choice of the choice really does matter.

If I do go with 6 core and OC will a h100i be able to keep it cool?

    Buy a CPU/Mobo/RAM bundle.

Better to go with a combination that is known good and working, than to spend a fortune on one that is not. If you run into a stupid incompatability that nobody else has experienced, your basically on your own.
