I meant say driving at 55 and lifting off a tiny bit, not really slowing down or lifting off completely."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0

Driving in town varies a lot depending what town and what the traffic is like.
Around here it can take you over 30 minutes to travel 1/3rd of a mile. Thats half an hour of barely moving where your mpg will be close to zero. This will reduce the average mpg considerably.
With my last diesel i averaged 28mpg over a full tank during the winter. But a few clear runs to the seaside etc and i averaged over 50mpg.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

MY Auto box is so dim witted it's unreal! the kickdown takes an age before it realises what it needs to do. On the other hand it stays in gears far too long when you are just plodding round town!
Oh how I would love a nice new manual that claims 70-80 mpg!!

So would 95% of the people who bought them.0 -
I would say early 20's is about the norm for a Focus 1.6 auto.
I ran an Astra 1.8 auto for a while and that would do 24-26mpg and that was based on about 1500 miles per month.
My mates Focus 2.5 ST does 26..
Yet if you swapped your 02 plate Focus for an 02 plate BMW 530i auto you would easily see over 30mpg because its just under 2000 rpm on the motorway.0 -

Ha! I do take the MPG with a pinch (handfull) of salt!!0 -
Try a MK2 Zafira 1.9 CDTi Auto if you want to experience terrible fuel consumption.
Over several years I drove loads of them round London.
16/17 mpg was typical. Harder driven ones could easily get 14mpg.
The petrol Astras they replaced were 1.8 Auto and did mid 20's all day long no matter what you did.0 -
I've got a Mazda 5, scarcely the smallest car around being a 7 seater, and would be appalled if I did fewer than 32mpg, even for short trips in towns; nearer 40 if driven at a constant 60mph (which doesn't happen too often).
I've also got a Nissan Leaf, which does an infinite number of mpg and is highly recommended! And it's is ideal for towns, lots of short trips are fine and no fuel/battery is wasted if you are stationary, you even regenerate energy when slowing down or going downhill.0 -
Thanks for all your comments

longest journey was probably 8 miles during that time so I expect the MPG to be low.
Looks like its time to upgrade the car

Doesnt matter what you buy. Short journey's like that will be nowhere near the advertised mpg figures.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
