Honda - Parts pricing in UK!!

Hi All,

Just wondered what peoples views were on this. I have a 2008 CRV which needs a replacement reversing camera. I have had a quote from Honda Uk and they reckon about £900. Exactly the same part can be purchased from Honda USA for about $300! Seriously annoyed with Honda UK and although I really like the car would think twice about buying another one because of this!

Honda has always been expensive on parts.

But what really boils my blood is the fact that whilst that camera is past the customers (your) warranty, it's still in warranty with their parts supplier/manufacturer. So the dealership will take your £900 and then charge the supplier £900 under warranty..... £1800, not bad for a couple hours work.

What I can't comprehend is how they can justify the difference in price in the two regions. I expect to be ripped off in the UK but not by that sort of amount. Do other manufacturers rip off customers in the UK to the same degree as Honda are doing here?

    Hi

If you buy a universal reversing camera from a well known auction site you can fit the camera into the Honda camera housing (same shape camera inside the housing).
You will need to change the wiring over to the Honda camera plug by cutting and splicing the wires (The colour code is the same on both cameras).

I did this for a friend who has the same Honda model as yours.

Cost was about £12 and works perfectly.

(His camera is mounted just above the number plate).

    Hope this helps

It certainly does thank you and may well have to go down that route. Astounding what Honda think they can charge in the UK for parts though. Have argued with them and they aren't moving.

Well its the same as with them not discounting their cars, during the 2008/2009 recession, MANY people left Honda showrooms disappointed that there were no recession discounts to be had.

Honda sell on the basis of being the most reliable cars (truth is debatable), not on the price of their parts.

Lets not also forget that Honda UK dealers, have an obligation of "first time fix", this means in the case of your camera being faulty, they'll replace everything linked to it (regardless of whether it's faulty), just to make sure the fault is fixed first time.

I dont think many OE's would offer a 7 year warranty. I've never heard of one that long.

Take a look at this one too:-

All dealer supplied parts are expensive. I would need to go for therapy if I had to go to a dealer to buy parts they will invariably be 3-10x more expensive.

The short answer is they don't have to justify it!

The slightly longer answer is that almost everything in the US is cheaper than in Europe, and by a large margin. Companies tend to charge what the market will bear.

BTW it's not just the UK: prices should be similar throughout the EU.

It's part dependant, I worked for a Tier 1, some parts had a warranty period of 8 years.... Especially on stuff for Honda or Toyota.

Ok, it must be part depandant, I work for a Tier 1 OE and its not that long.

Anyway unless the car manf/dealers send the part back to the OE they wont be able to claim warranty. Most people who fit the part themselves would just go and buy one and not leave the old part at a dealer and if a garage changes the part I bet they dont know how long warranties are on individual parts so they could claim warranty? In reality I bet there are few warranty claims on parts that old
