TV Delay compared to neighbour

I have a bit of an odd issue and not sure if there is anything I can do about it!

We live in a terraced house with thin party walls and have a new neighbour.

We were both watching the same football match on TV and as the walls are thin I could hear everytime they got excited.

Now they are not being overly loud as I say the walls are thin.

The issue is their TV is 5-10 seconds ahead of ours so I knew when there was a goal before the ball hit the net! It somewhat ruined the game for me!

Is there anything I can do?

One of you is watching through an aerial and the other through a satellite dish. I guess it's you with the dish.

Are you both are using different transmitting services i.e. satellite, terrestrial or cable. Find out what service your neighbour is using.

We are on Virgin so I am guessing they might be on sky. Like I say they are doing nothing wrong so can ask but think there is very little they can do about it.

If you want to know the reason, it could be that you were watching on Freeview, Virgin, Sky, and he was watching on one of those 3 that you weren't. Freeview could have been a wee bit ahead of Sky. After that it would also come down to equipment. When the signal is received, it has to be decoded, then sent up the cable to the TV, which might again play around with it a bit before displaying.
If you wanted to reduce the gap by a tiny fraction of a second, I would suggest turning off lots of the picture features on the TV, but I don't think that's worth it.
The solution to your problem would be to buy the same equipment as your neighbour, starting with the set top box. Or pay for sound insulation. Or buy a set of noise isolating or cancelling headphones...

Alternative solution - get matey with your neighbour and watch the match together.

I find this in different rooms in the same house using the same aerial, listening to the radio on the TV yesterday one of them was 2 or 3 seconds ahead of the other.

Not an expert, but I'd expect FreeView to be the quickest, which you should be able to get anyway.

Agree with the neighbour that you will both watch matches with a delay using live pause, and try to sychronise them. (It's not that hard to do).

Definitely due to the different medium: I've had a TV on upstairs and downstairs, one on Council Telly (aerial) and the other on Sky, same channel, and there was a clear 3-4 second delay.

Turn your TV up, sync your TV watching to them, go watch it at their huose or switch to a service with less delay... there's not much else you can do.

The only final option may be to upgrade to newer equipment which may be able to process the signal in real time - your Virgin box and TV will both add a little delay, your amp too if you have one. Upgrading these to newer versions might save you a second or two.

Ask your neighbour if you can go round and watch it on his TV :rotfl:
