personally I'd ignore the toad that told you you can't use the freepost address

Even if true (unlikely IMO) the package will just get re-routed to where it needs to go as long as you enclose a covering letter explaining the situation

IIRC you can use the freepost address but then pay the £1 or so extra for recorded delivery - i'd do that so you have proof they have the item

Worst case scenario they mess you about & you end up doing a visa chargeback instead

Also £14 sounds a lot - try myhermes or parcel2go couriers

I'd ignore the above advice and listen to the toad.

Especially since freepost is only free for the sender - meaning if the retailer has made OP aware they are responsible for the costs of return, they could then pass that unknown cost on to the OP.

The CCRs also state that goods can only be sent to any business address of the trader if they have not specified an address to send them back to - they have in this case so returning via freepost would also not fulfil the requirements of the consumer contract regulations.

Chargeback is not a given and I highly suspect it would fail if OP were to send them back via freepost as opposed to the address specified in their returns policy.

  • Is it just me that returns items bought online at sports direct then returns them to the store without any fuss whatsoever?
Ive done it multiple times and never had a problem, OK so I get a credit note but I'll spend it eventually and knew that was their policy when I ordered.
Might be easier just to say you've changed your mind, then swap for something better in store.

I didn't think you could do that.

I thought goods bought on-line had to be returned by post, not into a store.
  • It does indeed say to return via post but I thought what's the harm in trying?
I've never been questioned or advised to send them back in the post, just took them to the counter requested a credit note and that's that, seems to work like any normal return in a normal shop would.

If you want a refund, I believe they need to be sent back by post.

Apparently their website used to contain this info (but I can't seem to find it now):
Unfortunately unwanted online orders cannot be returned back to our stores for a refund but can be returned to our stores for an exchange or a gift card providing that they are unused and you have your original invoice the packaging and any tags still attached. For information on your nearest store please visit our storefinder find a store here section on our website.

That is my understanding, maybe chocdonuty has a local store that applies the refund rules more flexibly than most.

    I don't think they do.

I think I've got myself all mixed up here. :o

My understanding was that if you ordered on-line and didn't want the goods (i.e. change of mind), you had to return them by post.
Returning to store wasn't an option at all - even if you were happy to accept a credit note.

Would be good to have clarification. :)
  • It does say items MUST be returned via post

I thought I'd TRY to take them back to store despite the policy

They took the unwanted items back and gave me a credit note.

All I'm saying is it worked for me on several occasions and it may do for you so it's worth trying before you pay to return them via post.

Just explaining my experience and trying to save you money.
