I think that may well be the reason for involving the shipper - they can (obviously) check that the car exists before paying out the rest of the money.

@Leighthal - I assume that you checked with the seller that he has the docs for the car (namely the pink slip - our equivalent of the V5)? Without that you won't be able to register the car over here...

Its called the 'Title' over there. And yes he has it.

Good - btw, 'pink slip' is colloquial/slang for 'title' :)

Good luck with the car, hope it works out well for you.

The seller has emailed me to say that all funds have cleared and the collecting agent in the US should have the car to port by the 24th.I'll keep you posted.:j

My English agent has informed me that the car should ship around Nov 1st and arrive in Southhampton on approx. Nov 24th.

  • The car still has an ETA of 24th Nov.However,my shippers have asked me for a copy of the 'Bill of Sale'.Apparently this is needed by customs to prove how much I paid in order to calculate import duties.Unfortunately the seller never emailed me a copy.I have emailed him again to try and get a copy before the end of this week.
Has anybody been in this situation before? What happens if I can't get a copy of the bill of sale?

  • If you paid by paypal - is there not something you can print from there?

Was it an ebay transaction? Cos you could also produce something from there?

I am surprised the shipping company didn't ask for that before collecting the car. I know when I send items to USA with a courier company I always have to include about 6 pro forma invoices showing the cost of the goods etc. for customs

Hopefully seller will contact you though!!

You are correct.I contacted my shipping agent who informed me that printing off the page of the Ebay auction that showed my winning bid would suffice.

  • Buying a car in the US is a great way to save cash. I just imported a vehicle and saved over $11,000 - I really had no idea how to do it before I started researching, the best free site I found was www.importcar2canada.com - it has a step by step guide on how to import

I finally have the finances to realise my dream of owning an American muscle car(60's/70's).I'd like to know if anyone has bought a car from the US Ebay site.I could of course wait for something to appear for sale in the UK and avoid all the import duties and shipping etc.But there is obviously more choice stateside. Also,if anyone did put in a successful bid,who did they arrange the shipping details with?(ie: recommend UK companies).

Having just found out my daughter is having twins as well as already having my 2 year old granddaughter, I am in need of a bigger car to accommodate 3 car seats, and the only way I can afford a decent newish one is to import from USA. I have researched extensively on this and 'get' the general idea with shipping and import duty, vat etc. Its the details I'm not too sure about, like if I arrange the shipping, which I believe is about $900 (transglobal roro), is that all the transport costs or just port to port. Do I have to pay separately from dealer to port, then port to port, and what happens on this side? Do I have to get it from the port. I know I will have to pay 10% import tax on the purchase price plus shipping, then 17.5% vat on all that again, (taxed on taxes, only in the uk!!!) And, I believe, a customs charge (is it £50).
If anyone can give me a step by step guide I would be very grateful. Also an idea of what needs paying for the conversion and suv certificate would be great.

vix2000, wouldn't it be easier to get a good second hand people carrier in the UK? Our C8 for instance would take up to 5 baby seats easily and you also get the benifit of right hand drive which is safer when driving a large vehicle.
