Have been getting renewal quotes online for buildings and contents cover, all approx. £150 with accidental damage & personal possessions away from home

Decided to try my car insurance company for a quote online and it came up with the message - "we cannot insure you, phone xxxxxxxx "

I phoned them in a panic and they said they can insure me and gave me a quote .... (albeit £860 !!)

Now I asked them what do I declare in future to the assumptions "Never been refused insurance" - they said this is correct as they are not refusing to insure me. They asked me to quote online again whilst they were on the phone and again it said "we cannot insure you, phone xxxxxxx" ....

they have told me the website is wrong - they are not refusing to insure me - the website should say "we cannot quote online please phone us"

What should I do ? Take their word for it this is not recorded as a refusal to insure?

They haven't refused to insure you, they've declined to quote. In fact they haven't even declined to quote for you - they've just told you to phone them to get the quote.

A refusal to insure comes if the insurer quotes for you, you accept the quote and the insurer subsequently decides that they don't want to insure you after all - usually because they've found out that you've lied about something.

Declining to quote is different and virtually everyone has been declined a quote at some point. Every time I put my details into a price comparison site Saga decline to quote for me because they don't insure people under 50. It doesn't mean I'm an uninsurable pariah.
