Can someone tell me if I still get the protection please?

Hi guys, we are about to book a taxi this evening on our credit card, after speaking with the taxi company, they have asked us to pay by PayPal and we can enter our credit card details there.

We have found this option but just want to ensure we still get the extra protection in case anything happens with this firm as our holiday isn't until August and that is the whole point in us wanting to pay by CC.

Hopefully someone can help with the answer?

Do you mean you are booking a taxi for the trip in advance?

Payments through paypal are not covered under S75 as you pay paypal not the people providing a service.

If you were looking for cover in case the taxi has an issue and you miss your flights, that's what insurance is for, not S75

A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Hi, we are booking in advance but I was going to pay by credit card in case something happened to the taxi firm between now and then. We are going to the airport the night before and have travel insurance so won't miss our flight.
It was purely for extra insurance/assurance by paying by cc in case the taxi firm went under or anything.
The link they sent for payment takes us to our PayPal account but we can select 'pay by credit/debit card' and input our cc details for payment......

Section 75, as far as I know, doesn't cover for services, only goods purchased for over £100.

As above, if things go wrong, use your travel insurance.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • ah ok. I thought we would be covered under S75 so was happily going to pay the additional 8% they were going to charge by cc! So I guess I'm just as safe paying by the other option of bank transfer? It's £258 so want to ensure that if anything happens to the company I can claim my money back from somewhere!

Section 75 does indeed cover "services" (same £100 rule applies), but not in this case as the use of Paypal as a payment intermediary breaks the D-C-S chain.
  • Even if I input the credit card details separately into PayPal? If allowed, what if I pay over the phone?

  • Also (sorry) I've read Martins S75 article and it talks a lot about when a firm goes bankrupt you can claim, would it still be covered if they didn't fulfill what we had paid for as in didn't turn up? Or would this be down to our travel insurance? (Through our bank with Nationwides flex plus account)

If the firm goes under and you have to pay for a different firm you would claim that on your travel insurance so you are not out of pocket. The S75 cover is not really there to get a refund if a taxi firm goes under or doesn't turn up

  • Why not pay the taxi in cash on the day?
Whenever I have booked a taxi to the airport that is the way we have always paid.

A claim on travel insurance (if it were possible) would almost certainly result in a, say, £50 excess (and quite possibly per person?). Section 75 not only provides for reimbursement, but for subsequent losses too.

Of course, in the OP's situation it's irrelevant anyway...for the reason I've already given above.

On the contrary, that's exactly what it's there for as that would be a clear 'breach of contract'!
