Precisely guys - *I* don't know what the problem is, and have provided possibilities. So have you. OP has just blamed Plusnet and refused to believe anything else.
And I agree that if internet is important to them, and they can get fibre, they should go for it!0

It has been interesting reading through the comments on here. Must admit, I only came on because I was in the process of switching to Plusnet however, they kept trying to sale me a provider package that I wasn't interested in. I have been with TalkTalk for a while and their bb service has been okay, or at least up until the point when a Direct Debt payment didn't go through even though I had spoken to them several days before and they agreed to delay the payment request by one day so that the money would be in my account to cover it. Result: they cut me off immediately, which was a bit of a pain seeing that I do most of my banking online. Still, I suppose I should be grateful. The last time I was with them I asked for an upgrade and they accidentally cancelled my contract altogether. Only ended up back with them because my wife set it up when we moved. Guess I will have to keep looking and reading reviews for a while longer!!! :-(0

Just in case anyone was having sleepless nights wondering how this ended... >.>
I quit Plusnet, wrote off the money, and joined Sky. Had to wait nearly 2 weeks for them to activate the broadband, so I used a 1GB dongle see me through the lean downtimes. The dongle was a bit slow, and I obviously couldn't go round downloading 10GB games, but I was at least able to browse the web and use email.
From the moment the Sky hub arrived, I just knew Sky was better. For example, the hub/router could actually stand upright without assistance. The instruction booklet was a lot more detailed, which helped in setting up the router correctly. (I had originally wired it up incorrectly with Plusnet, but when that was eventually corrected, their broadband didn't improve anyway.)
And the evening slowdowns? Vanished, like a bad dream in the night. Getting about 12 Mb speed now, but the main point is it's consistent. Have had no slowdowns or disconnections. As you can probably tell from the speed, I went for bogstandard ADSL. Not intending to switch to fibre until it's as cheap as ADSL is now. I don't need it. TV on demand works fine, which is all I really want.
There is a final twist in the tale >_>. After I'd been with Sky for a couple of weeks I decided to cancel my Direct Debit to Plusnet. They've since sent me several emails informing me they can't access my DD details. Yes I know you can't, you morons: you're not providing me with a service anymore, so I'm not continuing to pay you money for it. Anyway, I got a letter from Plusnet a few days ago. I opened it extremely unenthusiastically, expecting it to be demanding money with menaces or something, when lo and behold it turned out to be a cheque for £100!
It was the £100 cashback deal, arriving 3 months late - literally money that I never expected to see and had long since written off. I also got a £100 Tesco giftcard from Sky on the same day! #richbeyondthedreamsofavarice0
