Desks - Can't find anything half decent

I was hoping you savvy shoppers would be able to point me in the direction of a place I can get a half decent desk from.
I recently bought a 1500mm desk from a local second hand place and it is rubbish. I regret buying it - it is the typical thin chipboard with a flimsy metal frame.
I used to have a desk with a solid metal frame (i.e. couldn't be taken apart) and from what I remember a single piece solid wood top.I still have the draws for this desk, all of which are solid wood, a good 12mm think and sturdy as anything.
I'm looking for something 1800mm long/wide by 800mm deep that is not made of chipboard and not what oak furniture land (far too chunky!) or Ikea or selling (all flimsy or not big enough!).
Help please!!!

I suggest charity furniture shops, auction rooms, gumtree etc.
And keep an eye on freecycle.
We have a firm locally that sells old office furniture - they just do office clearances.
I bought an ex-army desk at auction for £1, 40 years ago, still going strong!0 -

I just bought a big piece of Pine board and stuck four legs (from ikea) on it, another piece of wood with small legs for a monitor stand.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

I had a junk room about 6'x11' that i've made it into an office and made an L shape desk going along 2 sides. I used Mdf from B&Q sitting on battens / big shelf brackets. Then for drawers i bought plastic trays online.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Ikea do a wide range of desks, and their range spans domestic and business-use, so there is a range of quality/price.0

Ikea is unfortunately rubbish or not big enough.
Looked in John Lewis today, solid oak, looked just right, but too small (and £300!)
Looking into building my own now.0 -
Another home built one here - length of black granite effect kitchen worktop and sturdy metal legs from Ikea.0

I bought an oak desk from a secondhand shop as I wanted a really long desk and it was far better built than anything I saw in the budget/mid price shops and cost £40....including delivery.
Just a case of checking in person til you find the right one.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
