Fast broadband, which provider/technology would be best?

Have been living in a very rural area for a long time and had to make do with a 0.3-5mbps line for £25 per month. :mad:

Have just got a new property and I am confused by what is on offer. Not sure if we will be there more than 12 months, so don't want to get locked into a 18 mth contract with a provider. I presume there must be a way out of these, but no doubt it will incur cost.

Have visited samknows.com and it tells me:
The following services are available in your location:
BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU

Does anyone know from this list, which is able to offer the fastest speeds? I would prefer unlimited downloads but from what I am seeing online, unlimited is not such a problem, the faster 36mbps offerings are all 18th month contracts. Seems silly to go down this route if I may not be there in less than a year.

Lastly, I currently use my voice line to get my broadband. Are any of the offerings above fibre as we both have mobiles and would rather not have a landline and pay expensive line rental if we can.

Any suggestions would be great.

virgin you can have without landline , all the rest use a BT line and you have to have phone line ,


go to bt , plusnet talk talk etc , enter your new postcode and check what THEY say you can have.


most fibre setups req a 18 mth contract , I was told this was down to bt as line "fitters" , check check check and see what you can get

None of the above are fibre and even if you could get it you still need a landline.

ummm , all of the above offer "hi speed" non adsl services , correct they are not fibre to your door , they are fibre to the roadside cabinet near your house

Unless you want to pay an ETC of 6m at the end of your stay, FTTC with an 18m minimum term is not suitable, unless you transfer it over to your next property-which will start you on a new minimum term contract. So you are limited to ADSL speeds.
Speeds will be exactly the same from BT or TT, since all FTTC services are resold BT Wholesale services. TT appear to be the only LLU provider, the 3rd option will be Plusnet, which would be the one I'd go for.
An active line requires you to pay line rental. No active line, no broadband.

Where does it state a FTTC service is available in the OP's post, where do you get they 'offer hi speed non ADSL services' from when they are ADSL or LLU, since when has an ADSL or LLU service been fibre with either FTTC or FTTP, do you know the difference between any of them?

You question my advice I think yours is questionable and you are the one that could offer better advice, unless you can tell me otherwise.

how the hell would anyone on a forum know what's available , the OP hasn't mentioned there postcode or even if virgin are in the area


maybe the virgin 152 meg service could be classed as fast after there 0.3-5mbps setup they have now!


so to answer half of there question "Fast broadband, which provider/technology would be best?" , the answer is virgin media for a home user
