On the advice of the vet my puppy (4.5 month ShihTzu 3kg) has been on

Advocate spot on for small dog
Milbermax for under 5kg dog

On Tuesday, she had a tick & the vet gave her an antbiotic injection, which she said will also give her tick cover for 2 weeks.

The vet then said to also give her Advantix spot on for small dogs as well as the Advocate & Milbermax.

I've been trying to look at what each one specifically covers because it seems like an awful lot of chemicals to be giving the puppy.

As far as I can see, the advocate & Milbemax cover the same worms except that Milbemax doesn't cover tapeworm.

She definitely needs a tick & flea product which the Advantix will do both.

So is there a good wormer that covers everything? What do you use?

Sorry if I've rambled but I've just ended up confusing myself!!

Thanks in advance x

Ditch the chemicals I say (but each to their own!!)

Natural all the way - and don't let your vet sway you - their revenue is created largely by selling these chemicals so would of course never recommend natural.

Diatomaceous earth for worming and loads of other health benefits and coconut oil for flea control (google it - really good stuff)

I think we need a puppy photo please
  • No wonder you're confused!

What on earth is the vet thinking???

That's way too much chemical overload for any dog, let alone a pup!

OK ...... anti-biotics will not do anything for ticks!

Milbemax is a wormer (roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm)
Advocate is a flea prevention product that also covers worms (roundworm, hookworm and lungworm)
Advantix is a flea and tick prevention product but doesn't cover worms

If you need tick prevention then I'd use Advantix and a separate wormer (such as Milbemax)

If you only need flea protection & a wormer, I'd use Advocate & you will need to use something to cover tapeworms as well

OR if Advantage and an all round worming product

    HTH

As an example, I'm currently using Advantix (as my dog is allergic to tick bites and we're in a high risk area) and a wormer such as Milbemax or Drontal

Thanks so much for the replies.

For now I'll go with the Advantix & stay on the Milbemax. I definitely need tick prevention because we are in a risk area and she has already been caught once.

I'm most interested in the Diatomaceous earth though. I've had a quick Google but have a migraine coming on, so will definitely follow that up ASAP .

I was on the right path with my thoughts though so that's good anyway.

    Thanks for your help xx

I'll sort out a better pic in the next day or so. She looks really grumpy in that pic & she really isn't. She is a sweet bundle of absolute joy. I'll be in this forum quite a bit now, if that's ok. Love reading the old threads :-)

If you have cats in your household, be careful with ths use of advantix.

Another product to try in bravecto, its a chew that lasts 3 months, and treats fleas and ticks

No cats in the house, Rosie is the only pet. I'll add bravecto to check out over the weekend, thank you.

Have heard decent things about that but it's hideously expensive :( (especially if you have a big dog)

Re Advantix and cats - as long as you keep any cats away until it's dry it's fine and it really doesn't take long to dry (completely dry & not visible within 48 hours)

It's possible he was giving that as a preventive measure for lyme disease. Depending on how long the tick has been there, I'd have probably done the same for my dog as it's hard to tell symptoms in dogs.
