Problem with Vista and internet

I got a new computer yesterday which a friend set up, but it's not happy (I'm a novice at Vista). It's only connecting to the Net intermittently; sometimes when I press F5 to refresh, it loads pages and goes through, but it's very slow, and sometimes it just won't connect at all.

It's saying 'TCP setting is not compatible with router.' I can't see a separate router box thingy, but the idea is that my laptop works wirelessly off my PC (or something); the laptop won't connect at all, and the PC is intermittent. Sorry - I'm a dunce at this kind of thing.

On the Local Area Connection thing, under Properties, when I ran a diagnostic thingy, it showed this:

Internet Protocol Version:

(TCP/IPv6)
(TCP/IPv4)

Is the problem that both of the TCP boxes are ticked? Should I unclick one of them, and which one?

I'll be speaking to my friend later and he's coming round tomorrow to help sort it out, but I'm not a happy bunny right now. I've got the Dummies Guide to Windows Vista which I'll work through later, but I'm hoping the solution is really simple!

How exactly is your computer connected to the internet?

It's a Be box from my ISP. The SSID says SpeedTouch7EABD7. I know the PC is wired directly into the Be box, and the laptop is supposed to be wireless.

ROUTERS ARE NOT OS DEPENDENT. THATS THE IDEA OF THEM. They couldn't give a monkeys !!! if you're running DOS, BeOS, Linux, Windows 1.0, Vista, Solaris, Unix etc.

If you work giving tech advice, Marcuk, I'd look at doing something else if that's the level of knowledge you have. You're not one of those gimps that works in the Tech Repair at PC World are you? Certainly seem to have the same level of "expertise".

WHAT IS MORE LIKELY is that the drivers for the network card/onboard network adapter your computer is using need updating. On some chipsets, Vista installs some drivers automatically but they have been known to be flakey, especially onboard ones where the motherboard uses SiS chipsets.

You can untick IPv6 as this is currently not really used outside of corporate networks. Basically IPv6 is a replacement to provide IP addresses once IPv4 runs out, which isn't due to happen until the end of the decade.

As for the laptop connecting through the PC, go to the Network and Sharing Center and make sure that Password protected sharing is turned off. If you're connecting to the internet on the laptop through the PC, remember that the laptop can't use the internet if the PC can't.

If you've not got a wireless ADSL modem router, you'd be better off buying one. A Netgear DG834 is a good one. That way you don't need the PC on for the laptop to use the internet.

He is right though. Giving wrong advice is one thing, giving it while stressing how expert you are in the matter is another.

It actually makes sense, he seems eager (looking at his other posts) to advise people to reinstall windows for smallish problems.

Another less than technical response! Are you talking about Ethernet or wireless?
