I've just done mine online. Can be done at any time apparently and they distribute your remaining payments for the rest of the year.
Painless, and i wouldn't have thought of even doing it if it weren't for this thread.

That's correct - you can do it anytime providing you haven't lost the right to pay by instalments.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

I am paying monthly this year like I did last year, I did not have to request to stay on 12 instalments.0 -

If they follow the legislation then strictly speaking the request would have to be made again but most councils (quite sensibly) aren't making the extra work for themselves.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Its your legal right - so just call them and set it up ASAP - have they taken your April payment yet?
Personally I like the two month payment holiday in February and March - so am sticking with 10.0 -
Based on OP's stated location and username suffix, I suspect the best place to start will be https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/benefits-council-tax/council-tax/how-to-pay-your-council-tax which seems to offer a fairly good range of payment and contact options!
Yep, very quick & easy in MK. Did ours a couple of months ago, useful to have more DD's for current a/c savings interest criteria & 2 month gap was a nuisance.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0
