Council Tax

Has anyone changed their Council Tax payments from 10 to 12 months, and if so how easy/difficult was it?

Better to ask on the Cutting Tax board, but from what I've seen you have a right to make payments over 12 months and this MSE article seems to confirm that.

So it may just be a case of pushing your council until they agree.
  • Did the same 2 months ago, with no problems. only thing I did was, set up Direct debit, during the process (of setting up DD) there was a section checking if I want to 10 month / 12 months. so I chose 12 one.
    with Manchester Council.

    email or ring your council.

In legislation it does state the request should be in writing but most authorities will accept a telephone call.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thank you! I'll e-mail in the first instance and follow up with a phone call if necessary, although past experience shows that you can spend all day trying to get through!
  • I've done this for the last couple of years, via phone call to the Council Tax department and with my Council it's a fairly quick phone call.

Only thing to remember is that it's needs to be requested every year and best time seems to be as soon as you receive each new annual bill.

Not every local authority does this, mine keeps it running until it's cancelled or otherwise changed.

Based on OP's stated location and username suffix, I suspect the best place to start will be https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/benefits-council-tax/council-tax/how-to-pay-your-council-tax which seems to offer a fairly good range of payment and contact options!

I've just done mine online. Can be done at any time apparently and they distribute your remaining payments for the rest of the year.

Painless, and i wouldn't have thought of even doing it if it weren't for this thread.

    Rep+1 :).
