Change of Name Deed - how to get banks to accept

I've sorted a change of name deed after my divorce (changing to a new last name completely not going back to my maiden name) and just took it to my bank.
My bank told me since its not a government certificate they can't accept it and to bring back the government certificate. However speaking to my solicitors they say I don't need one - enrolling the Deed is voluntary.
Anyone faced this and got around it?
(FYI - born here in the UK so no issue with nationality going on).

Can you get other things changed first then go back in with those, as well as the deed? Maybe a utility bill or similar.
Your solicitor is right that you don't need anything official to change your name.0 -

Was it the "bank" or just one clerk?
Have you looked on your bank's website about changing your name on accounts?0 -
Registering the Deed is voluntary but it is up to the bank whether they accept it or not.
Why not register it?

Why not get your driving license/ passport changed and go from there? Arguably ironically, many of the governmental things are the easiest to change and carry the most weight when going to banks etc0

I did my driving license first, then the utilities.
I then had a bill and my license for change of name at the bank.0 -
You don't need anything official, I changed surname years ago and my bank changed it on my account & card just on me sending a letter telling them i'd be known as x from x date. It was never done by deed poll x0

Make an appointment for a review (selling pitch) & be clear you won't touch any product unless it's in your chosen name? One individual does not a bank policy make. (Usually.)
There's little point in loyalty all being one way - bet other banks would pay you to open an account in any name you could demonstrate.0 -
I had absolutely no problem with NatWest when I changed my name (by Statutory declaration). I just gave it to the clerk, she took a few copies and made the adjustments. The new name was showing on my online banking when I got home.
And there is no 'government certificate' for a change of name.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
When Halifax tried this with me I just shut the account. Santander changed it straight away and they still have my custom.2025 April £237/300

Because it costs £36. You can buy a hell of a lot of chocolate for that sort of money.2025 April £237/300
