Wikipedia agrees http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staycation
(not that I'm claiming Wikipedia to be an infallible authority on anything
)
And I agree.
My last "proper holiday" defined by "paid to sleep in another bed, somewhere, while having free rein to eat ice-creams during the daytime, wander around in shorts and look at things" was in about 1995, a week in a 1-bed flat in Cornwall with my sister (I got the sofa bed).
I don't go out in the UK either as the entry prices are too expensive. Even a couple of car boots can add up to £5 with fuel, entry/parking fees.
Places that charge entry priced themselves out of my budget years ago.0 -
! (If you don't know what staycations are, they're holidays in the UK!)
I thought a staycation was staying at home; for example you take the week of work, stay at home and have lots of days out as well as generally relaxing, eating out more and drinking booze a bit more.
To suggest a staycation is a holiday in the UK suggests that you can't have a holiday in the UK. And that it is only a holiday if travelling abroad......0 -
I agree with those who say that a 'staycation' is staying at home and exploring your local area. We go on holiday in the UK every year and it's every bit as much of a holiday as going overseas. Self-catering is what we do and spend nowhere near the amount quoted!Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

Last year a 5 night stay in a static caravan down in Great Yarmouth cost us £900...plus fuel, food and all the other bits that come with a trip.
We've now gone halves on our own static with bf's parents; now a holiday for us only costs the fuel to the East coast and back and food (though we are gradually developing a nice little stock cupboard there) which we tend to get from Aldi/Tesco. (the caravan was dirt cheap too) and I can say it's going to be one of the best places to build memories with our daughter!
£1300 is well over a months wages for me - just couldn't afford that!************************************

How very sad.
Britain has a lot to offer.
I've travelled all over the world -as far as Australia , all over the US and Euope etc but I certainly wouldn't dismiss Britain - but then my idea of a holiday was never just about getting a suntan - That said last time we were in Devon it was hotter than most of the Med at the time.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Sometimes just driving from one side of London to the other can take longer than a flight to Palma
Sorry I disagree
(and anyone who tries to drive across London rather than use the M25 or (preferably) public transport deserves everything they get !!
I was born in Kensington -I know alllllllll about the joys of driving in London LOL) I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

We are thinking of independence in Devon:D0

Eleven nights at Butlins last June - in term time - plus travel, plus food, plus spending money ... probably did total £1350. Did MSE Megan really mean £1352 a piece?
If we tried to go in school holidays, the accommodation alone would cost more than £1350. (eg Minehead, first week of August, Silver Bungalow for 3 - £1452). I don't blame people for going abroad, it's generally cheaper, and we'll be joining them in that exodus when littl'un is sufficiently mature to cope with flying.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

It does depend on what you do though. We cant afford to go abroad so we go camping instead. We have spent a lot on our camping kit over the years but typically pay £20 to £25 a night for all four of us. We cook most of our own meals, dont spend a huge amount on days out and can still have a good holiday for £350.
My sister always rents a holiday cottage for about £600 for the week in the summer then allows £100 a day spending money. Very different budgets and different holidays.0
