Staycations

According to research by Voucher Codes, 83% of Brits will staycation this year, and it will cost them £1,352 a piece! (If you don't know what staycations are, they're holidays in the UK!)

It might be the MSE in me, but I highly doubt many people on here will be spending that much for a staycation!

What do you think? Have they overestimated it? Or would you be happy to spend that much for a trip in the UK?

Better posted on the UK holidays board?

As above, shouldnt this be in the UK board?

How many nights? How many people? what are you including in that number in terms of travel, accomodation, food/drinks, tickets to attractions etc?

If that was the total cost for a family of 4 for a 2 week holiday then I'd argue that even for MSE that is fairly cheap

Far too little detail to say what is a reasonable price. Couldnt see the original story to see if it gave more detail as the only Staycationing news thread on their site I spotted was a requote of research by Trip Advisor

I always thought a staycation was when you stayed at home but took annual leave and treated your home as a holiday base and did holiday stuff from home -eg trips to the beach or landmarks, days out, ate out etc.

That aside using Megan's definition a nice (but not exceptional) hotel in the UK can cost £150 per room per night (possibly two rooms for a family with older children)- add on eating out, admission fees , petrol, car hire , alcohol (no duty free) etc.

A stay in Devon somewhere like http://www.expedia.co.uk/Devon-Hotels-Bovey-Castle.h1050218.Hotel-Information?chkin=04/05/2015&chkout=05/05/2015 would probably with good meals and a couple of bottles of decent wine come to a grand with very little effort just for a weekend for two - never mind a family holiday.

Even a holiday mobile home in Devon in high season (I looked at late July in Dawlish for a 2 bedroom unit) is around £750 for a week add on food for a family , days out, petrol and the numbers stack up. Of course you can do it a lot cheaper - if you go off season, don't have kids, always cook rather than eat out, don't drink, only do free things etc.

Often these sort of surveys include things we wouldn't consider part of the budget like holiday clothes or loss of earnings though so without knowing what their research asked about it's just a sound bite number.

I always though 'Staycations' were when you stayed at home and had days out instead of a holiday (either abroad or in the UK)

    I agree

And I also don't understand why this was posted in the Overseas Travel section - perhaps a board guide could move it !! (If the MSE staff have no idea how to post in the correct forum there seems to be very little hope for the rest of us though !! ;) )

A holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.

Can be at home or simply staying in your home country but not your actual home.

Well I'm going to Devon in June and a four hour drive minimum means it's definitely NOT a staycation - The drive will take longer than last year's flight to Palma !!!

Unless you live outside of the UK or if Devon has declared independence and I've not spotted it... then it is a Staycation.

Sometimes just driving from one side of London to the other can take longer than a flight to Palma

I think when you factor in the cost of petrol/travel/parking, plus meals out and entry to attractions. For a family of 4, over 2 weeks, £1300 is on the low side

Yes, you can find things that are fee to do, but when in holiday you want to do things that you. Cant ordinarily do. So a trip to the park or beach, although can be a relatively cheap day out, its not something you cant do at ang other tiime of fhe year

We haven't had a family holiday for 5 years and we can't afford it again this year. We can never afford to go abroad, we don't even have passports! I went abroad once 15 years ago for a weekend to Paris but that's it, so we have staycations every year! It's not where you go or how much you spend but who you are with that is important :-)
