PayPal Wrong Currency

Hi hope you are well.

Last month my Father paid some money to a UK charity via their PayPal page. He's elderly and asked me to add his new debit card to his PayPal account when I noticed that the money he paid that month was in Australian Dollars. Every other payment to that UK charity was made in the GBP.

I went to the UK charity website PayPal page and it shows currency set at GBP with no way to change it. I've visited MSE's new Resolver site and PayPal isn't on there, I've asked if it could be added.

In the mean time has anyone had this same problem and were they able to get PayPal to pay the original amount in GBP and get exchange rate fees refunded? Thanks.

How was the transaction funded? By BACs or was the debit card the primary funding source?

Did he perhaps make the payment differently that month? Was it the first payment? Its been a while since I used paypal but for some companies, it was possible to either log in and pay or to pay without logging in by card - and this meant logging you were charged paypals exchange rates, not logging in you were charged your card issuers exchange rates (and fee's).

Is your father in the UK? (just wondering where AUD comes into it if its a UK charity and GBP on the website).

    Hi thanks for your reply.

Transaction was funded by his debit card.

Payment was made the same way as usual. Visited the UK charity website, clicked on donate, sent to the charitie's PayPal page where GBP is there already selected in bold and unable to be changed.

This was not the first payment, there have literally been loads of payments to this charity, even a few in the same month (last month March) and all have been in GBP except this one.

My father has been in the UK whilst making the payments. Not sure where the AUD has come from either! Charity doesn't even have an Australian branch or website.

Got an automated response from MSE's resolver, not sure when or if PayPal will be added their tool yet.

To me, that looks like a strange phrase.

Is the debit card that was used issued by a UK bank?

How in the hell is that a strange phrase? Never mind. I don't know if your genuinely trying help or just taking the mick. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you are trying to help.

Yes the debit card has been issued by a UK bank, it's called Lloyds.
My father was in the UK while making the payments (if you say strange phrase again I'll report you). Payments were to a UK charity with his UK bank issued debit card. As I clearly wrote he made numerous payments that month which were all in GBP.

Wow, that's very aggressive! I think the reason wealdroam thinks it was a strange phrase is because it makes no difference what country you are in when you make a payment on the internet, only what country your account is in.

The phrase you used made it sound like your father did not necessarily open his bank account in the UK.

Not sure that it is wealdroam's post that needs reporting. :D

Are you saying that until you added his debit card to his paypal account, your father's payments to this charity had always been in pounds sterling?

Perhaps you should review the process you used.

Anyway if he sent $30 instead of £30 he's actually sent less pounds. So unless he's insanely upset the charity got less money then planned I don't see what's the issue. Surely he can just increase next months payment to sort out the shortfall?

    I don't get the problem
