I don't get some people's attitude to insurance. I can get on the Eurostar and be in France in a couple of hours. I can also get on a different train and be in York in a couple of hours. Why do some people say I'm foolish to make the former journey without travel insurance (I have an EHIC)? Or do these people think I should have travel insurance to go up to York as well?Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

If an articulated lorry hits you in York and breaks every bone and puts you in a coma, the NHS will look after you for free and provide after care.
If an articulated lorry hits you in Paris and breaks every bone and puts you in a coma, what will the French health service do for you? I honestly don't know the answer.
The fact that you have a EHIC does not give you the same treatment as you would get in this country.
You get the same treatment in France as a Frenchman gets.
If a Frenchman has to pay for treatment or medication so will you.
Ditto for Greece and every other country covered by EHIC.
If you make an informed decision about not taking out travel insurance, thats's fine and nobody's business but your own.
But a lot of people believe that the EHIC is a free alternative to travel insurance.
It isn't.0 -
If you die in France, I doubt your EHIC card would pay to repatriate your remains. If you are seriously injured, the EHIC card would not cover the costs of transferring you to a UK hospital or provide a trained medical professional to accompany you.
My brother's friend's insurance saved them about £7k when his friend suffered an allergic reaction and had to have a nurse accompany him home following ten days of treatment in hospital. Of course, they each paid about £50 for the cover and whinged about it in the first place

Can you really not see the difference between having an accident in York where the Ambulance will be free, NHS will look after you without having to pay, will liaise with your family and you in English, move you to a hospital closer to home if/when able, and having an accident in France where you may have to pay for an ambulance, they won't necessarily speak English, may have to pay 20% of your treatment, will have to pay a daily fee if you stay in hospital and will receive a hefty bill if you need repatriating to the UK?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Travelling to Western Europe without travel insurance is incredibly foolish.
Please explain how you get to this idea, considering EHIC card covers health; only £250 (max) if you are robbed or lose a non valuable item (mobile phones / tablets aren't covered); flight delay is only £50 (though £250 from the airline); volcanic ash not covered; the only thing that it does cover is emergency air evac.Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0 -

You will get charged quite a bit for a non-medical patient transfer and £8.50 for each drug they use. So its not free in the UK.Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0 -

Care to provide a link to that info.
It's certainly not MY experience of the NHS with family members who were in patients and moved after a time from a specialist/non local hospital to our local hospital.
