If I agreed a fixed price then I would expect to pay a fixed price, but I don't get your point as there is no suggestion of the OP agreeing a fixed price with their removals firm.
I would expect that a figure quoted by a removals company is what you would end up paying. Many removals end up with a bit of waiting around either because of a delay getting keys or the sellers being slow moving out. Removals companies must consider this fairly routine.

I would not expect to pay extra unless the delay meant the work could not be completed on the same day.

Equally I have never had a removal company tell me that they charge by the hour. Every quote I've ever had has just been one number for loading everything at one end, moving it then unloading at the other end to rooms of my choice.

I guess my point is that they are the experts, it's what they do all day every day and they are well aware of all of the possible issues and delays and should be perfectly capable of building that into their pricing structure.

Just thought i would give my little rant  and warn other people to try and not move on a Friday or the last Friday in the month as this is a very common issue caused by the solicitors!! and be aware of extra charges billed to you if you use a removal company.

I bought key waiver insurance via my removal company to cover such a situation. This kicks in to pay the removal company's extra salary costs if the keys are released late. You wouldn't expect them to work all evening of free, would you?

If you read your small print, it will probably be in there somewhere.

You then have to accept the risk that you might not get keys to make your move work like clockwork.

That really goes for the whole home moving process! There are far too many variables that are outside of any one individuals control to guarantee that everything moves like clockwork.
