More fool you for doing a move on day of completion - nothing say s you have to get keys by x time

move on and enjoy your new home

Can you explain a better way of doing it then??

All good and well saying "more fool you", but what's the solution?

Will be interested to know as I will be moving soon. The only 'in chain' house moves I have done is with my parents, and that was done over night due to distances. However my move will be 'down the road'.... I can't realistically expect the moving firm to hold into the stuff over night for the next day without paying through the nose.... can I? Then there would be accommodation costs for all 4 of us!

I do see that a lot of movers offer insurance wavers to limit the bill if such a delay occurs.

It depends on individual circumstances. If you are renting then it I would advise to time the end of the tenancy two or three days after completion. Not only will it limit the effect of waiting for the keys, it also makes the moving process much less stressful.

Obviously, for existing home-owners this is not an applicable scenario.

This is common, the system relies on the money arriving, which can also be delayed by a multitude of other issues.

When I bought this house I insisted on a Wednesday completion - if it all goes very very wrong that gives two working days to get it sorted. If things go badly wrong on a Friday then nothing can be done until the Monday. When I bought this one the sellers didn't get away until after 5pm. I'd been parked up the road/doing drivebys with the keys in my pocket since lunchtime.

There was somebody on these boards about 3 weeks ago who had their van packed and the removers ended up taking the whole lot away into storage and they had to get a hotel for the night/weekend.

However, perfectly normal and incredibly common. Very rare to have any problems.

I don't get why they charged extra? Were you made aware that there was a period included and if it got past that time there would be additional charges? Doesn't seem fair to me. I can understand if it rolled over into another day but to charge extra for extra standing around time on the same day seems unreasonable.

I don't know what you do for a living but most of us expect to be paid for our time

I expect a removal company to arrive, load up, sit around for several hours doing nothing, then unload it at the other end on the same day.

Not too much to ask I think. Clearly, as I said, if it goes into a second day everyone's schedules go awry. But I don't expect to be charged for a couple of extra hours sitting around doing sod all.

And for the record, as a primary school teacher I am not paid for the number of hours I actually work. If teachers were paid for all the time they spent working they would all retire at 30, millionaires.

You sound like some customers I get in my Taxi who can't seem to understand why the meter goes up whilst we are stationary in traffic.

    Time is money

That's because you charge on a time and materials basis which should be blindingly obvious to anybody who gets in your cab.

What if it was the other way around and you took your car to a garage for a fixed price service. Would you be happy if they tried to up the price at the end because the job took them longer than they thought it would? Or would you say, no we had a deal for a fixed price for you to do a job?

If I agreed a fixed price then I would expect to pay a fixed price, but I don't get your point as there is no suggestion of the OP agreeing a fixed price with their removals firm.
