Got credit report, help with default please

After many years of having terrible credit I pretty much gave up on even trying for loans or credit.
However, this morning I was brave enough to join up with Experian and see what was going on!
To my surprise, my score is good at 928.
I always make sure everything is paid on time these days, so that has obviously helped a lot
However, the only negative thing showing was a default from Vodafone.
As far as I was concerned, the account was paid in full and closed years and years ago!
But according to my file, it defaulted for £14!!!
The date it defaulted is 2/1/2010, so pretty good that its not going to be on there for long if I ignore it.
Personally I would rather pay for £14 if it would allow me to get it removed sooner!
Someone told me that if I contact them to remove it, it will reset the 6 years, and others have said if I pay it I can request for it to be removed
I assume the answer is to wait 8 months and let it drop off the radar.
Help please?

Paying it WILL NOT reset the 6 years for it being on your report. The default and all trace of the account will come off your report 6 years from the default date no matter what.
If you dispute the fact that there should have been there in the first place, then that may be a possibility, but you have left it a long long time to initiate such a dispute which may make it more difficult than it would have been if you had done it sooner.
Some companies have also been known to remove old defaults as a gesture of 'goodwill' if you explain that you disagree and stress how much it affects you unfairly. May be worth a go, but honestly, from what I have seen at least, Vodafone have very little 'goodwill' towards ex customers who they don't think they are going to make money out of again.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks, thats what I thought regarding contacting them and it restarting the 6 years but thought I'd check just incase!
I have no interest in disputing it simply because I cannot remember if they did or did not send a letter first, plus we moved around that time too.
I'm just wondering if it is worth paying it, and if I do, will it make any difference to my rating?
If not, then I might as well just wait 8 months and wave goodbye to it anyway0 -

As it's so old, paying it now won't make any difference to your credit rating. Just wait the 8 months for it to drop off.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards.
