Thick, good quality (not see through!) ladies WHITE tops. Where oh where to buy?!

Options
I'm perplexed. Whenever I go on a hunt for ladies plain white tops (either long sleeved, or sleeveless - scoop neck or boatneck, just good basics for work), the tops are always too thin. What I mean by thin is that I can see the flesh toned tinge of my skin underneath the garment (and usually my bra!) not a good look, IMO.

I thought I had cracked it with this Gap top, which looks perfect and thick in the image:

But nope, when it arrived, same issue! I'm an average size (10) with pale skin - I really don't know why it's so difficult to find white tops which fit the simple requirement of being properly opaque!

So please share, good ladies: where do you go for these basic wardrobe staples?

    White clothes are usually see-through.

I recall a woman in the swimming baths in Germany who wore a white swimming costume. Seriously, she might as well have gone in naked

If you have to wear white, I think Fruit of the Loom do varying thicknesses of their t-shirts, but I don't know how thick the heavyweight one is.

Have you tried M&S t-shirts? I have a couple and you can't see through the fabric at all.
  • I know they are not the cheapest, but I have t-shirt tops by Hugo Boss (BOSS & Hugo Range), which cost around £55 for the short sleeve and £65 for the 3/4 sleeve and they are thick material, not see through, very well made and outlast any other brand I have bought, so in the long run for basics they are cheaper than buying lots of cheap thin tops.

I have a 3/4 t-shirt top from them that has been worn to death and still looks new 4 years later. I find most high street shops these days use very thin see through cotton, so see though you can see my nude t-shirt bra though it which is a bit too revealing for me.

    I've been Money Tipped!
If you wear flesh coloured bras then it negates the issue :)

That does seem to be the case with the fare available in high street shops, at present. I know that neat, fully opaque white tops do exist though - I've seen them on women before!

    Thanks, I'll have a gander.

I tested one of their vest tops recently by putting my hand beneath the fabric, and unfortunately I had the same issue - I could see pinkness underneath.

I haven't tried their tees (figured they'd be made from the same fabric as the vests), but will now - thanks for the recommendation! :)

Ooooh I so wish I could afford the initial outlay for a few (and also get past the instinctual reaction of  at £195 for 3 tees...!) :o

No doubt you are right that if they're still in such good condition after 4 years of use, then they're actually better value than the cheaper, thinner tops. Maybe they'll have a decent sale at some point? I'll keep an eye out, thank you. :)

Thanks! Are they totally opaque and non see-through?

Not really - I mean, yes, it'll stop the bra from showing quite so much, but it doesn't solve the issue of your skin showing through. Just doesn't present a professional or well pulled together look, IMO.
