Just after some advice. Me and the wife bought our new car a couple of weeks ago and asked for the V5 to be put in joint names. We do this so we can both insure the car every alternate year to keep our no claims intact.
This morning the V5 arrived and its in my name only. Rang DVLA and they claim you have never been able to put the V5 in joint names. This is completely false, we bought a car in 2008 which had both our names on the V5, one in 2010 that had both our names on, and 2012 that had both our names on. The guy at the DVLA said there is no way this is true. (I still have copies of my V5s!)
Anyway, problem is it was my Wifes turn to insure the car this time, but now the V5 has arrived and is in my name only will this void her insurance? I am obviously a named driver on her policy.

I've never known a V5 to be in both names.

It's no problem to be joint owners and insure alternately. The person named on V5 is the keeper not necessarily the owner.

Not a problem until the insurance company ask if the policy holder is the registered keeper.

I thought you used to be able to have the V5 in joint names but it ended years ago, when the new certificate type came in. But obviously if you have more recent ones then I'm wrong.

Your wife can still get insurance in her name without being on the V5. I managed it without even sharing the same address as the registered keeper but only a handful of companies would do that. With a married couple at the same address, you shouldn't have a problem and then you can both keep your NCB.

My V5 which was issued in July 2014 has tick boxes for:

    Mr, Mrs or Miss.

Then a box under it for Title, is Ms, Rev, etc.. so you could leave the tick boxes blank and fill in the title box with Mr & Mrs, then fill in the names accordingly and hope that the DVLA work it out.

You can have a policy without being the registered keeper. I've done it for years when I swapped cars with a family member.
  • If you name is Fred and your wife is Wilma, couldn't you register the car as Fred Wilma Flintstone?

OK seems a few different answers have asked more questions ;)
Like I said, we have had the last 3 cars in joint names on the V5, maybe the DVLA have recently changed the rules but they wont allow it anymore.
RS2000 is right, they do ask if you are the registered keeper that is why I'm a bit worried now. RipplyUK and Herzlos are telling me what I want to hear, that its possible to do. Will have to ring my Wifes insurance company when she gets home and try negotiate!

I think it is likely that the DVLA made a mistakenin previous years.

Have never heard of having joint names on a V5.

You can have a vehicle in a Company name with a named person on it though.

There's not any issues with having the main driver on insurance not being registered keeper, not sure whether it affects premiums for un married couples etc but was told by insurance adviser that with married couples it doesn't affect premiums. We currently do the same as OP to keep no claims going, currently I'm main driver, car is registered in wifes name.
