Getting rid of tarmac

I recently moved house. The previous owners had tarmaced over the front garden, I want to undo this and return the area to being garden.

It is flat, with easy access from the road so there would be no issue with getting any necessary machinery in. The area is about 20 x 22 feet.

I anticipate that as well as removing the tarmac, it will be necessary to clear whatever is underneath, and put down topsoil, and that it would be necessary to get a skip to dispose of the old tarmac etc.

Can anyone give me a very rough ball-park figure of what price range I might expect for doing that work?

In terms of looking for quotes, would you start by contacting landscapers, or groundswork companies? Most ads I've seen seem to be aimed at people wanting to lay tarmac or paving, not to remove it!

I have some physical limitations so there is no question of me being able to do any of the work myself.

Many thanks

  • You’d need to know what’s it was laid on (concrete/ brick .hardcore etc) to get accuracy… e.g 2" of concrete underneath it could be 2ft dig a test hole 1ft square depth until you reach layer/surface your happy to put top soil on... calculate removal amounts length, width, and depth and get quotes from there

We used a landscaping/hard landscaping company for two jobs. One was to remove our tarmac drive and part of the lawn to replace wit block paving and a few months later to relay both our lawns , so this company would do all the jobs you require.

When I had my old driveway taken up they planned to get a grabber lorry to take it all away but the grabber people said they couldn't take tarmac so it would have to be put in a skip which was far more expensive.

You need to check that the macadam you have is not classed as special/hazardous watse. If it is your skip costs will be higher.

As per above - dig a test hole. Our front garden was only gravelled ... but it didn't stop there being 18" - 2' of hardcore underneath ... then you really need someone with a digger and a tipper - will be phaffing around with skip deliveries and collections for a week or more otherwise ...

They were £185 on Friday and a labourer is £100 a day.

If I was digging up a drive I may well do it myself but as I'm not there won't be any complaints. ;)
