That raises a second question, Visa CC and Mastercard are also covered via chargeback, are American Express?

They arent "covered by" but the terms of their payment networks create/ allow chargebacks to be done.

The AmEx network rules have similar chargeback type rules. No idea about Diners Club.

Technically they have their own rules, just as the Visa and Mastercard ones are not word for word the same but all three are close enough that for a consumer they can be considered the same

The above is to the best of my knowledge, havent spent a long time comparing them and thinking if there is any possible scenario where the slight differences could result in a material difference for the consumer.

B&Q & Matalan only places said no & our monthly 'spend' usually hovers £1500-£1800, so worth it for us to carry both. More stores take it than I'd thought.

We also tend to find that smaller, independent shops and particularly pubs and restaurants often don't take them - When we're eating out at anywhere independent we have maybe a 50% success rate using AmEx.
The situation's worse for takeaways, I don't think i've ever been to a takeaway that takes AmEx, and online ordering/aggregation services like just-eat don't.

Some other larger chain shops are also holdouts, in addition to the traditional B&Q neither Range or Go Outdoors (except when buying online and paying via PayPal) take it.

Go outdoors take Amex in store as do the range now.

Amex vicinity is a good site for seeing which restaurants take Amex. Google American Express vicinity and put in your location into the checker.

Are you sure? I literally tried my card in both stores for the umpteenth time last weekend and both were rejected - Go outdoors' card reader just flat out refuses, and Range's, with the wierd behaviour it has always had, initially accepts the card and verifies the pin, then says the payment has been rejected, and the cashiers always tell me thats what their machines do as they don't take Amex.

You can buy B&Q gift cards at Tesco with Amex.
