Options
Are American Express credit cards,(from Barclaycard), covered under S75?

  • All UK issued credit cards have to comply with S75.

    Charge cards don't.
  • Barclaycard Amex is not an American Express.

Basically you have an account with Barclaycard who have paid American Express money to use their AMEX payment network. Barclaycard does this as it costs companies more money to take Amex and so Barclaycard ends up making more money. Thus when you use your Barclaycard Amex you are just using your Barclaycard.

Had old Goldfish account, this was taken over by Barclays,I have 2 Barclays cash back credit cards, one Visa and one American Express,(with the AE logo),the Visa card pays 0.5% cash back and the AE 1% cash back, the logic is to use the AE as it provides better cash back, but not if this is not covered by S75, hence my question in the OP.

On the back of the card is says, "This card is issued by Barclays Bank PLC pursuant to a licence from American Express"

Do you know if it as widely accepted as Visa CC's ?

Was using Capital One CC, but that is stopping the 1% cash back from 1st June.

Not quite as widely accepted, but not far off.

KFC and my dentist are the only exceptions I've experienced this year.

I too have these both of these cards from Barclaycard. The Amex version is covered by S75, as is the Visa.

In my experience, the Amex version is not as widely accepted as the Visa version, but I carry both anyway ;)

B&Q & Matalan only places said no & our monthly 'spend' usually hovers £1500-£1800, so worth it for us to carry both. More stores take it than I'd thought.

I don't know if you saw my post in another thread but B&Q looks like it'll be taking it soon. My local one has the Amex logo up on each cashier's desk but currently covered up (But you can see it in the right light through the paper covering it).

Even the Post Office (All 11500) take it now, that was pretty much the only place I ever went that didn't take it.

S75 is part of the Consumer Credit Act.

Any credit agreement covered by the CCA will get protection from S75 subject to the individual transaction limits.

If the card that facilitates the transaction happens to the use the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, UnionPay etc its irrelevant.

Chargecards are not covered by the CCA due to the fact the debt has to be paid off in one go.

That raises a second question, Visa CC and Mastercard are also covered via chargeback, are American Express?
