Not my experience at all.
The 8 speed auto fitted to most BMWs is a superb box in every way and I have no complaints with the 7 speed S-tronic (ie. DSG) on my A3.
CVTs are an acquired taste.0 -

Best auto's were BMW 1997-2003 and the Vauxhall box 1996 onwards.0 -
You will never convince us oldies who grew up on 3 speed torque converter autos I'm afraid.
The sound and feel is just "right"
To you young 'uns loads of gears = good/performance/close ratio/economy or whatever todays buzzword is, to us oldies
more than 2 gears = inflexible engine
1 gear was enough for the Mallard to get to 125MPH with 6 coaches on the back, 2 is enough for a traction engine, 3 is more than enough for anything with a V8 at the front, 4 with a lockup is ample for these tiny engines we get today.:)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)
