Can I reassemble these Linux OS files back into an .iso image?

I want to try Zorin on my PC but can't afford the 695MB download. I've found the files on an old CD but I failed to burn the image because I didn't know what I was doing at the time. The files inside it seem to be intact, so can I return them to an .iso image? I want to put it onto a USB drive using unetbootin, which allows you to use an existing .iso that you already have on your PC.

You can, what OS do you use at the moment?

And Zorin is a great choice.

If you register at http://zoringroup.com/forum/ they'll give you loads of help.

If you know anyone with unlimited data on a Three mobile just get them to download the version that you want, that's what I did :)

I'm still using XP, but whatever Linux version I eventually use will have to connect easily with my 3 broadband dongle and only the bloated version of Ubuntu does that AFAIK.

I would not waste time on the ISO already downloaded.
One of the best xp replacements is LXLE 12.04.5 (the 32 bit version). Either go to somewhere with a free wifi connection and download free from http://www.lxle.net/ or order a disc on ebay for about £2. Other good ones are Zorin lite and also Linux Mint xfce.

Another idea is to keep an eye on the Linux magazines. They always have several distros to try on the cover DVD.

Zorin is a good choice and I don't suppose it will be long before it turns up again on one of the magazines.

In fact I have it here. It was on Linux User & Developer issue 136

If you PM me with your address I'll be happy to pop it in the post to you as it's just sitting in my drawer.

I agree that mint would also be a wise choice as there is a much bigger community behind it which means you are likely to find more help with any distro specific quirks.

Welcome to the Linux world and there are plenty of folk here to help you. It's a bit of a learning curve to start but stick with it. One thing to bear in mind when you do install it, there will be a few updates as with a new windows install but the process is a lot quicker however expect your dongle allowance to take a bit of a hit with new files needed.

...I've found the files on an old CD ...
If you have a really old piece of hardware that does not support then newer features, or specific software, only then maybe use an old o/s.

In 99% of the cases newer offers more features, bug fixes and more security, and in a few cases it may even be a bit faster too.

I also prefer mint to zorin. However when I had zorin issues, the community did respond within a few days. I have had no mint issues so can't compare them that way.

Actually I've been using Ubuntu for three years and I installed it within Windows on a netbook. When I lost XP due to a power failure, I was surprised to find that I could still boot Ubuntu, but I never got XP back!

Thanks for the offer but I really wanted to test one out this weekend; I can get any Linux distro I like from the library tomorrow.
In any case, those Linux mags are £5.99+ I believe.

ISO's are just cd images, so if you have the cd, you could simply recreate the image from that.

one problem with using an old distro, is that its likely you will end up downloading as much as the cd while it tries to update

I bought this DVD disc of LXLE 12.04.5 recently for £2 and it arrived within 2 days.

LXLE works well on old computers and new ones for that matter.

Why did you buy this when you can download it free from here?
