To be or not to be - a mobility scooter user

I have been thinking about a fold up type of scooter.

Went in the Mobility shop and they showed me the new Pride one. It was OK, had a test drive. But the price £2600!!!!
The older model, whilst not being as classy was still £2300.

Had a look at Amazon and they quote £395!!

Where does everybody else get theirs from - it seems to be a right rip off system?

Had a look also on the Motability website - they quote £100 deposit and £17 a week to rent one.

You well know the system Andy so please don't waste our time, you go buy your mobility scooter by whatever means you wish.

Edit: I'm also reporting your post. We all know you are well aware of legislation and eligibility for benefits and suchlike and this trolling post will end up in a war of words over outright buying and others using their mobility component of DLA to get the same scooter. You're more than aware of the score and your post is only designed to create conflict. Seen it from you too many times sadly.

Andy may know the system, but I don't. My daughter who is married, bought her own power chair but uses her PIP motability payment for an adapted vehicle. She had to pay money towards the vehicle as well.
I feel sad that it has cost her a fortune, but both the chair and vehicle allow her to be independent and work.

My husband has recently been awarded PIP enhanced rates for care and mobility and I am currently looking into things so he can get out and about.

It would be a shame if the post was deleted. I didn't realise it was a trolling post??

I dont know the politics of this but such items can be had used and often in very good condition, on the second hand market for good prices. There is a balance to be struck between mobility and growing obesity. Obviously the les active you are, the greater the chances of getting fatter hence heavier and less mobile..a vicious circle for some.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I will look into second hand thank you. Please don't assume my family are obese, they have medical conditions.

I was borderline anorexic before I was put on steriods. I shot up to a size 16. Now off the steriods the weight has come off (well most of it i was too thin before). We aren't all sat at home shovelling mars bars down our necks.

I'm sorry but I have no idea what you are on about.

I was simply asking why the price for the same piece of equipment in a specialised mobility store is 6 times greater than it is on amazon.

Why is that? And is this common, are people being ripped off?

Nowhere in my post have I even mentioned benefits??

I'm not but almost inevitably, someone who rides around on a scooter will gain weight. Most of the people you see with these are fatties.

  • I am posting this because whilst it may not be of use to Andy, it may help others.

My first scooter was a Pride, and I bought it for about £600 new from a mobility shop. It was nothing but trouble from start to finish. It was always breaking down on me, causing me great difficulties when out on it. I had it 'repaired' under warranty several times, until the warranty expired.

Eventually I gave up with it, and now hire a Shoprider Paris from a hire firm. I pay about £25 a month out of my DLA, and I have had no problems with it at all!

Thank you, that is very informative. The guy at the mobility shop told me that the 'new' Pride (folds up instead of having to be dismantled) is the 'Rolls Royce' of its type. Very interested in hearing your views on the Pride.
It was the Pride that varied so much in price.

    Forget Pride then.

I'll have a look at the Shoprider now.
As a matter of interest are you saying that you rent at about £6 a week? Does that cover all and every problem?

Could I ask where you got it from - is it a shop just local to you?

Bearing in mind the one off experience so far, I am very wary of being ripped off.

PS just had a look at the Paris and the Cameo. both seem good and light.
  • I got my scooter from here: http://www.forbesmobility.co.uk/?gclid=CLjKmdGzgMUCFWOr2wodXmcA8g

It's a refurbished one, and the price reduced after 18 months. Since Forbes service and repair the scooter at my home, at no extra cost, I see no reason to get a brand new one. Mine is in excellent condition.

Al services, repairs etc are covered, and I am very impressed with the company. The scooter is, however, a bit bigger than the Pride, although it's range is much further, and it will go on track roads and most nature trails without difficulty.
