Is cider less potent than beer? It's not just fizzy apple juice you know.
theres quite a difference between encouraging a teen to drink and encouraging them to drink responsibly.
I suppose it would shock you to know that at OP's son age, I had well and truly made my mind up I didnt like ales or cider and had moved on to spirits. My parents never made a big deal over alcohol, we were allowed very weak shandies as kids on special occasions, and as we got older we were introduced to other drinks.
And seeing some of the states that people get into (who's parents had the attitude they shouldnt drink till they're 18).....I'm quite glad that wasn't me.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
I've been idly pondering this subject since the proprietor of a local cafe almost refused to serve my 16 yo son a glass of cider whilst he was eating a sit-down meal with both his parents.
We knew we were within the law and the woman was eventually persuaded to allow him to have a drink, although she specified how much he would be allowed (the law does not specify).
I understand a proprietor has the right to refuse to serve people, but I believe they must provide a legitimate reason if they are not to be accused of discrimination.
What I am pondering is, if a proprietor refuses to serve someone on the grounds that they are 16, despite that person fulfilling all necessary criteria to make the consumption legal, are they guilty of age discrimination?
Your confusion is
Publicans are legally 'allowed' to serve 16 year old with drink with a meal
They are not legally 'obliged' to serve the samesame
They do not have to serve any one any more than someone can demand to buy your car, and for same reasons they do not have to give a reason
You would need to prove discrimination they don't have to prove anythingWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -
I wouldn't have served you (I've worked in the trade in the past) .
Whilst I am an advocate of parents taking the mystery and supposed glamour out of drinking -My belief is this is something that is done in the home not in public. I've seen parents sneaking their kids alcohol in pubs and I've kicked them out for it. Sit at a table with three adults and a child and ordering four drinks will pee off most responsible landlords as most *can* count.
I wouldn't have got into an arguement with you over it-I'd have said no - and if you pushed it I'd have refunded your meals and told you to leave.
If you felt your child's "human rights" were compromised.........so be it.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Am I the only one who is incredulous at the fact OP has created this thread and ferociously argued back against others because someone wouldn't give her 16 year old booze?!

If it were me I wouldn't have a problem with the response from the proprietor and would have asked for a soft drink and be done with it.0

I can't believe this thread is still going.
Landlords and pubcos are not obliged to serve anyone, damned if you do, damned if you don't0 -
