    Post a photo.

Re not being able to turn your hall light off, I suspect the light fitting is looped in and a cable is loose. Take the ceiling rose cover off and post a photo of that too.

    >(British Gas) disturbed the cables to some of our lights. We are now unable to turn off our hall light<

That's a worrying fault as they must have bodged a "repair" which means the live isn't going through a switch any more.

I know in my loft the electric cable was installed as tight as a drum so pulling it about to get insulation fitted is likely the cause of the fault.

If BG messed up my electrics while installing inslation, I would demand they repair it at their cost.

This there no legal requirement to bring upto code before fixing this fault call them back and demand they return you to the situation you had before ie working hall lights.

Might nth be a bad idea to get a safety check done and any problems fixed but theye caused a fault and it should be put right at there expense

I thought I'd come back and update as I appreciated all of your input.

Our independent electrician has been out today.
    • There's nothing legally wrong with how our consumer unit is installed
    • The loose cables etc. in the loft were 'a bit of a mess, but far from the worst' the electrician had seen. They were no risk to life, or the rest of the electrics
    • The lighting fault was caused by a split, exposed wire in an incorrectly wired circuit with dual switches. The independent electrician believed that this lighting circuit had been dangerously installed by someone who was not an electrician. He replaced the circuit with no fuss

There is a lot more to the story that I won't share because I will be contacting SG to make a formal complaint about the completely inappropriate approach of their electrician in this case. Suffice to say that one employee's rigidly narrow interpretation of company-specific guidelines (as opposed to professional ones) led to us being scared witless and presented with a quote for £3,500+ Having given the original guy the benefit of the doubt, I am disappointed that the stereotype of the mercenary employee of the big company has raised it's ugly head

Thank God for healthy cynicism
