How do you stop programmes launching on startup?

I seem to have quite a few programms which bring up a screen on my desktop when I log on to my computer - ie my Brother printer. I don't want to see them every time & it means logging on takes ages whilst they all load. How do I get rid?. I remember once upon a time doing this with windows startup tasks but been all through control panel & can't seem to find it
(I think I just removed ticks last time to stop them). Any help from you lovely techies out there much appreciated:j
Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

Start>All Programs>Startup Delete what you don't need from here. Then I'd advise downloading/using ccleaner which has a good program startup management facility."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

If your running Vista you can disable start up programs using Windows Defender it has a software explorer thats tells you whats running on start up and you can disable them from there.Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best
Just because it's free don't mean it's good
Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:
Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right

It's always better to try at first to find the 'run on system start' or similar option in the settings of individual programs first.
Then if that options not there use a startup manager like mentioned above.
I've started using Autoruns - It tells you about absolutely everything so you might want to Hide Microsoft Entries in options and/or only untick things under the Logon tab.
Of the 25 things that want to startup, I've only allowed 4!
Also worth a look is Startup Delayer to stagger the things that startup rather than have then load up all at once0 -
https://www.windowsstartup.com and download Windows Startup Inspector.
Use this website to look up entries and see what's safe to disable and what to leave.

I use STARTUP INSPECTOR. It's free and very effective. Just press Consult, then go through the list of items in the box and check or uncheck each item as required. There is a key called 'Rating Ledgend' on the bottom left, which helps you to know if it is required or not.
Her is a link to the information and download ...

spybot has a very useful feature in which you can enable/disable an entry on start-up - just tick or untick (and you are not actually deleting the startup device either)
