I think its understandable that they will not give you a cheaper tariff. They will not want you on supply with them as you have refused to pay the required deposit and they think you may default. In this case some companies would insist you go on a prepayment meter.

If you have come from another energy supplier that has your payment history then perhaps they would accept you without another credit check.

Hi Joyful, interesting point. The person I spoke to seemed happy for me to be a customer, with or without paying the deposits.

I advised him that I was going to be switching given the deal I was given. I think there's a big difference between me actually going and trying to switch to them instead of being forced to have supply through them because the previous tenant did.

They seem to be making it as difficult as possible to pay by charging more and not giving me the payment options they offer to other customers.

As I've mentioned I've had accounts with some of the other big energy companies and never encountered this.

It's rather strange that you are complaining about being on standard tariff when you took 2 weeks just to register. Had you done this on day one, you could have commenced a switch on the same day, and by now be well on the way to being with your preferred supplier and tariff.
They don't want you as a credit meter customer because of your apparently poor credit record. but since you are already in a deemed contract they have to offer you something-and that is Standard Variable. A month on that vs a fixed online discount tariff might cost you about £6-8 extra.

I guess the main thing is that I wanted to be a customer, although on one of the other tariffs. I was happy when I moved in that it was on EON which is the reason I didn't have contacting them as a priority as soon as I moved in. I've never been asked to pay a deposit (which amounts to about 6-7 months usage) with any other energy company and really didn't expect it.

Deemed contracts are on the default tariff, which is always Standard Variable, which has no exit penalties. Even if Eon had offered you another tariff, you'd still have been billed for those two weeks on SV.
The other reason for registering on day one is to submit accurate opening reads, so you don't pay for someone else's usage.
Something may have changed on your credit history since you last changed suppliers. No supplier is obliged to give you what is effectively unlimited credit on a credit meter.

All they were saying is because I wouldn't pay the deposits.

I phoned them a few times today. At 9am I was told to phone after 11am as the system wasn't working. At 11:30am I was told to phone after 3pm as the system still wasn't working. At 4pm I was on for nearly 40 minutes about this.

So why at 6:00 PM did you post?

I was also not told why I wasn't given a choice of tariffs

I knew that meter readings had already been given - in fact, during the call yesterday I wasn't even asked about meter readings.

I don't accept not being willing to pay these deposits as a reason for being put on the most expensive tariff, especially when I've been forced to be a customer (for a short period of time). As I've said I want to switch as they won't offer me what they offer other customers and advertise on comparison sites, they are essentially asking me for £400 deposit for around £60 - £70 usage...or I get the most expensive tariff and least convenient ways to pay.

    Any thoughts on this Malc?

The service was very poor - I wasn't told the deposit was repayable after 12 months, I wasn't asked for meter reading (just thought of this - I assume now they have the correct readings). I was happy to be a customer, all I wanted was the same deal everyone else gets and that is advertised on the comparison sites.

It's up to you to submit meter readings when you move in-it's not Eon's fault that you failed to do that for over two weeks. As already pointed out, your credit is bad and therefore Eon will only accept you on a lock-in, long term contract with a refundable deposit. Since they don't want your business, why don't you go to a supplier who does?
They don't know how much you might use before you switch-a credit meter offers you open credit, not just £60-70 worth.

as a reason for being put on the most expensive tariff

E.ON's variable tariff is not the most expensive, their 2 year fix currently is. Also, the variable tariff isn't that much different from the cheapest, the 1 year fix, for a standard user it is about 3% more expensive. As you claim to be a low user, this difference will actually be lower as the daily standing charge remains constant on both, only the unit price will be higher.

Not exactly your complaint here I know, but wanted to clarify the details.
